Are the 931 exhaust valves sodium filled? If not did anyone make them for the 931?

Not an expert, but I believe so.

That is the rumor, but I believe it is largely unsubstantiated at the moment. I'm not aware that anyone has sliced one open.

Back when I worked on my Saab 99 turbo, the factory manual had disposal directions for the exhaust valves. Drill 1/8" hole axially though the head of the valve into the hollow sodium filled section. Then toss valve in a bucket of water. Did it a few times expecting more excitement, there was only a little bit of bubbling. So anyone have a spare exhaust valve you care to drill a hole in for the sake of science?

Having heard this more than once, including from my local guru. But could find no documentation of same. So, in the words of my currently favorite educational site: "Hot for Valves decided to investigate".

Cut one apart. No sodium. Stainless and probably other expensive alloys mixed in. But no sodium.

John's oversight was to do the experiment at room temp. Valves must be heated for sodium core to liquefy.

I'll readily concede that point. However, I saw no discontinuity in the cross-section.

if you still have the cut pieces, you could just heat them with a propane torch

It'll make you jump if you try that.... Chuck it in a bucket of water and it'll fizz.

Am I the only one who finds it remarkable that Porsche would have used sodium valve stems and NOT list same in the tech specs or Turbo repair volume?
