Not exactly unconventional, per se, but McGuyver-ish nonetheless...
I cut up several pieces of old heater hose (two different sizes, one to fit inside the other) and some large black zip ties to bolster the stock exhaust hanger donut on my 928, basically to replace the funky piece in the middle that always tears off with age. It worked beautifully and is way more secure than the original part. Still on the car!
Moments like those make me thankful I hang on to removed, seemingly useless old parts _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

When I was much younger and did not have money my muffler pipe had a hole in it. A coke can with the ends off was wrapped around the hole tied with wire and it worked for a while. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I had a common overheating problem because the "bellybutton" indent in the expansion tank was leaking.
I took a couple of sturdy rubber stoppers from the lab (the kind used for beakers and test tubes), stuck them in the top and bottom indents and drilled a hole all the way through. Inserted a threaded rod with a nut on each side.
Was supposed to be a temporary fix but worked so well that I haven't bothered getting a new tank

i have a couple
1) an aluminun "NO PARKING" sign.
i had a 5inch by 6inch hole in front of the left front wheel well of my 86 caddie. i used pop rivets to hold it in place from behind, then rattle canned it to match the car. passed the safety inspection with flying colors!
2) a 16inch long log.
thats right, a log. it was more of a tool than a repair. i had an 88 Ford F-150 custum, the starter was on its way out. when i didnt have any one to help me, i used the log to hold down the clutch while i used a screw driver to make a conection across the celinoid. luckily i never shocked myself, and she always started right up. _________________ "Kraut cars, they know how to build 'em".

my red 924 has a fiberglass front spoiler and because of the bumps i lost one of the 5 bolts that hold it to the car and being on the road i "fixed it" with a cable tie. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

But the question is, percentage of those put to use, vs. those waiting for their shining moment. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

story of my life....
on the 78, i was up in the catskill mountains when the steering went out (scary moment, on a remote curvy cliff road with no guard rails, on a fast downhill steep sloping road and i didnt have a parachute. i got the car stopped with one wheel hanging over the edge of the abyss below!) the rack end of the steering shaft stripped out! i used an aluminum soda can , i cut into strips , and used it as a shim for the knurled end, and tightened up the coupler. it worked like a charm, in fact it work so well i had a heck of a time getting it apart again when i replaced the shaft, it welded itself in quite nicely!
I once converted the wiper linkage on a maverick to a hand crank after the motor went out using scrap i found on the side of the road during a nasty deluge of rain that i knew wasnt going to end for hours. had to drive with one hand stuck under the dash, but it worked...
I had a series II XJ6 that was a constant source of road side improvisation, crazy gluing electrical contacts that had become un-soldiered, making carb o-rings out chewing gum or pieces of old hose, zip tying an improvised plug after the rear brake line in the master cylinder blew out (and almost killed me, went 200 feet through the woods and almost into traffic on a major highway!) i used a piece of tree branch, wrapped in plastic, and secured it with the large tie wrap i carefully removed from a nearby snow fence, it sealed and i had enough brake pressure to stop,it got me home!
and I wont even get into the duct tape fixes.... _________________ Eric

About 5-6 years ago I was driving out of town with my friends Ford Transit minivan and suddenly coolant temp went through the roof. Stopped and saw that radiatopr had a major leak, like few cm's long and 2-3mm wide.
When filled up, it drains fast. So, I went to the field few metres away and collected a handful of grass seeds, threw them into the coolant system and after 5 minutes of idling, the leak stopped. Filled the system once more and I completed the trip (100 km's) and just bought a new rad. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Last winter our furnace-fan belt snapped in the middle of a cold spell. We were snowed in, and the only belt I had on hand was an alt belt from a 924. It's still in the furnace and running like a champ. _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor
