I have a 79 N/A and after allowing the car to sit a time, maybe two months or so, it does not want to start. Turns over, has fire.

Normally, I can hear the fuel pump at work, but not now. I broke out the service manual, a Haynes, and looked for the location of the fuel pump relay. In one section, it says the relay is on top of the fuse block, second from the right and has a 16A fuse above it. But, in the diagram, it says the relay is on top of fuse block, second from left.

Looking at the fuse block and the relay plugs, I found there is no relay in the second from left position, but there are fuses above the relays on the left side. There is a relay on the second from right position, but is that the one I am looking for?

Also, the book says to jump number 13 to number 14 pins in the relay socket to test the relay. But, which is what?

Everything else about the car is ok. Just this issue. My questions are:

Where and in what position is the fuel pump relay?
Which pins in the socket am I to jump?
This is the second time this has happened. Any other things I may not be aware of causing this?? The last time, it decided to pump fuel without messing around with anything. Wonder why it would do such..

Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated

My relay is second from left but may be different on other models.
Perhaps you could post a pic of your relay box

When you find it, jump pins #30-87 in the relay socket. The pin numbers should be stamped directly on the socket if you look carefully.

rkn is correct. It's the second from the left on the top, the original is silver but after markets may be black. Also check the fuse; it's in the panel above the one with the relays (look straight up into the dash). I think it's the second from the right and should be red for sure.

I can't post a picture, but when I look at the fuse block, the relay panel is above it, then another smaller fuse block.

Second from the left on the relay panel, there is nothing. Not even a socket for a relay to plug into. It is an empty cavity. The first on left is occupied as are the other relay sockets. The second position is the only empty one.

All fuses, top and bottom, are good.

There are 2 rows of relays. The top row is comprised of individual removable sockets. Apparently the second one was unclipped from the panel. It may be floating around behind there somewhere, or it may have been re-clipped onto another position of the panel. Have a look around for one "floating". -Otherwise you'll have to pull each relay, note its' position and part number (good information to have even without your present problem). There are a few topics here that have the relays listed, that can be referred to once you have your numbers written down.

I finally had the time to tinker with the car and found that my fuel relay is in the third position, not the second from left.

After jumping the #30 to the #87, there was no hum from the fuel pump, so I went out back to check the pump. Using straight wiring from the battery, I checked the (+) side and got nothing. Then, I checked (-) and the pump ran. I guess the fuel pump ground is faulty. I ran an additional ground wire and the car starts right up each and every time.

Now that it runs again, I parked it back where it belongs and put it on jack stands. Maybe next month, I will play around with it some more.

Thanks for the help, y'all.

Cool. This comment seems a bit backwards to me...

It should be; Now that it's running I took it for a ride and smoked 4 Mustangs!

Good luck on the rest of the repairs.

If you smoked 4, you've got 16 to go.

I like the car ok, but it is more of a toy than anything else so I don't drive it much. Maybe 6 miles in nearly a year

Good luck on the rest of the repairs.

When time, motivation and mood come together, I will replace the hoses, belts, fluids and do a service. Maybe in a year or two. Maybe.
