I just became a new 924S owner, wanted to say hi. i also have a question. As suggested by many of you, I plan to change the timing belt first. bought a haynes repair manual to do so. however, it doesn't specify anything about the tensioner, except i shouldn't touch it b/c you need special tools. however, my understanding is the tensioner in the 924s does not need any special tools.
whats the deal? and is there any walkthroughs online that may help as well? thanks in advance.
ps - pics coming soon. _________________ 87 - 924S |

Search is your friend. Also check Clark's Garage for a detailed write up of the job. _________________ Toofah King Bad

It seems you're confusing the 924 and the 924S. They are different. To cut down on the confusion think of your 924S as a 944 in a 924 body.

To get another perspective on the timing/cam belt change go to:
www.arnnworx.com and read about his tensioning equipment. His site also has information with photos on maintenance.
As a new owner who will be timid with the belt change since a wrong adjustment will ruin your valves, have the Porsche garage do the belts or have a mentor while you do it the first time.
OR--get the Porsche 9201 tool and calibration bar-First choice.
Second choice--the Arnnworx tools and wrenches.
The spring tensioning cam belt roller on the 1987 924S is not 100% accurate. Other DIY methods will work once you get the "feel" for the belt.
GL & welcome

Most 87 924S cars do not have the spring tensioner. You need to remove the timing belt cover to see if you engine has one.
And, as another Poster has mentioned, even if your engine has the spring tensioner, you need to check the belt tension have releasing the spring tensioner, and tightening it's retianer bolts, since the spring tensioner is designed to set the belt tension under static conditions. The spring belt tensioner does not automatically adjust the belt tension while the engine is running. |

Fear not. I just did my first 2.5 belt/seal refresh and it went fine. The front end of the motor is mechanically interesting, but not mechanically complex.
And the funny thing. . .once it was all torn down and cleaned, it all went together like a finely engineered german engine. _________________ Toofah King Bad
