So I did my cam tower gasket (again) this weekend. Car's an 83 944 but same as 924S in this respect. Third time in about 5 years, so I'm getting good at it. Thing is, the first one I put in dry, the second I used sealant on, this time (lucky 3) I've done it dry. Each time the rotten bolts worked loose and that's why it leaked. So I guess sealant or not makes no difference - the issue is the bolts. I didn't have too much cleanup this time, even with the sealant to remove.
I used blue Loctite on all the bolts along the exhaust manifold. And here's my quandary: I can't retorque them without breaking the Loctite loose. Checking torque is pretty much a moot point 'cause if the Loctite's holding then the torque wrench won't give an accurate reading.
So my fingers are crossed. Believe it or not, I don't mind doing this again if I have to - it's a relaxing afternoon - but it'd be nice to do something else...

I would consider using new fasteners, and avoiding LocTite. The torque figures in FSM are for dry threads unless otherwise stated. _________________ Toofah King Bad

I was afraid you'd say that. I think I'll just leave it alone until it decides to leak again. Or perhaps go ahead and replace all the bolts.
