|
|
Well, here’s my problem. My car I bought was all gutted out for an autocross racer. I think it deserves a second chance to be a daily diver so I’m slowing putting it back together.
All the gauges work fine except the temperature. I don’t know if it wasn’t put back together right or if I just need a new temp. switch in the radiator or a relay, which would be really easy fix. My fans do not turn on when hot (maybe because there’s nothing telling them to turn on) and the only way I can tell when my engine is really hot is by touching the heater core while I’m driving (haha must be the worse temp gauge ever) When it’s in the 40’s at night going down the freeway it stays really warm but it’s not hot, but now that it’s 65 it’s hot to the touch and It’s scaring me to even drive it until it’s fixed right.
I have done a lot of reading on the board to find what to do.
I read and was told: if I take the wires off of the radiator switch and create a bridge between the two, the fans start up. So I’ll do this today and see what happens. I’m also looking at diagrams to see if my temp gauge is wired up right and if it’s getting power.
Any ideas are very helpful and appreciated. _________________ White 1987 Porsche 924S manual |

The temp switch on the radiator is for the radiator fans. If the fans do not run when you connect the leads together, ground both wires and see if they run, since all the switch does is to provide a ground to the fan motor.
The sensor for the temp gauge is on the cylinder head.
You should bring your car over to my house sometime.... _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Alright, I jumped the two wires, I didn't ground them like you said Paul because that would take another wire.... and one wire was hard enough to put on from the top so I went under the car, it was really easy to get at and had lots of room. The one fan works fine, Just seems like it could use a little lubrication. So I will be ordering an radiator switch from paragon-products.
Anyone know which one i should get? There are 3 differrent temp setting.
75-70 degree C
82-77 degree C
92-87 degree C
I think the middle one should be good, not running it too high and not having the fan kill the battery running too long.
As for the temperature gauge not working, I'll buy an Water Temperature Sender, there are two type for the 924s $41 one and an $18 one. I think it looks like ones a female and the other a male connector?.

Also, has anyone used Redline Water Wetter? Sound like a good thing to have, once the radiator is cleaned out.
I guess I'll see where to go from here. I Hope this will fix it, OR I'm going to have to take it over to you Paul _________________ White 1987 Porsche 924S manual |

Why can't you use Water Wetter with anti-freeze? The instructions say you can. It just does not work as efficiently as when it's used with pure water.
Water Wetter doesn't contain any anti-corrosion protection for the alloys in the cooling, heating, or engine, or lubrication for the water pump. |

You are correct you can use water wetter with antifreeze, just not on some tracks (antifreeze ban). _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
