Shouldn't every US 2.5 have a spring (so called "automatic") timing belt tensioner?
And on a related note, where is the 2.5 engine code stamped?
Can you guess why I am asking? _________________ Toofah King Bad

No, all 944 got the spring belt tensioner for the 87 model year along with the extra 11hp (higher cr pistons).
The 87 924S started getting the spring tensioner around the end of the model year (after June 87?).
I think Porsche used up the blocks that were manufactured for use without the spring tensioner on the 87 924S, and started putting the engines with spring belt tensioners in, after the older design blocks were used up.
Something like what they did with the MPG gauges, since some 924S got no MPG gauge parts, while others got some parts (not all), and a few actually got working MPG gauges.
Engine type number and serial numbers are located on a flat spot on the top rear of the engine. Below the flywheel sensor connector block on 87 and earlier blocks. On 88 and later blocks, the serial and type number are on the right side of the block.
My 924S didn't get a working MPG gauge or a spring belt tensioner. |

| I bought a red 1987 924S parts car that did not have a spring belt tensioner. Till that point I thought they all did. Hmm, lets see, that engine is still sitting under a tobacco barn in NC with the head removed. Probably home to some mice now. |

So can you look at the front, balance covers off, and tell whether or not is has the spring tensioner? _________________ 67 Mercury Cougar XR7 under Restoration

Oh yes. Timing tensioner will either be a small subtle roller with offset hole or large contraption. You can't miss it. _________________ Toofah King Bad

| As I remember, Clarks garage has some nice diagrams of all the timing belt setups on the 4 cyl water cooled porsche engines. www.clarksgarage.com |
