I can't believe I'm saying this, but at least give Automobile Atlanta a call to see what they can do for you. Be careful.

I'm still looking around for a replacement engine, and am waiting to hear from a few leads. A mechanic in GA says that the whole bottom end of the engine is damaged (the crankshaft, rods, engine lineboard are damaged, and may need replacement). The engine as it is knocks very loud, and may have rod bearing damage. This guy hasn't taken apart the engine or done anything significant - he told me this stuff based upon the engine's sound.

In the meantime, I am still considering towing the vehicle to WI, as that mechanics rates are more reasonable that what I've been finding around Atlanta.

I'm open to all options (including scrapping the vehicle altogether), but will wait until I have news about an engine.

What have your experiences been with cross-country towing? Or even driving a rental truck (Budget, Uhaul, etc) yourself?

Thanks again to everyone for your help and suggestions.

Please don't even try to fix that motor, it's junk. Sorry.

try ebay , I saw a couple if not just only one engine for sale, not sure it it was running but you may give a try their, Im thinking of getting an extra engine down the road and slowly overhaul or revive it to avoid a situation like this.

El Chato, I think I saw the engine you mentioned on ebay. The price is good, though it has been sitting on a shelf for 10 years. Also, the mileage is unknown. How reliable do you think the engine might be, given that it hasn't been in a car for years? The seller said he tested it, and it does run.

my 79 sat for like 10 years pluss 3 when I gotted, It ran few times to keep everyting in motion, but when I took out of the storage it immidiatly died, had to ajust the cis, replace the fuel pump, and clean the fuel distribuitor, after this its running, I feel other members can give you a better approach on the question. also check on the shipping If you were to go for that engine, Im in El Paso, Texas and they wanted 300 just for shipping pluss the cost, it just aint worth for me to bring it form that far.

http://www.coxautopartsinc.com/ THey have one, includes a 3-month warranty, a bit spendy 750 bucks. Down near Moultrie, GA,

Did you check out the 400 dollar one at A&B auto salvage, in Griffin, GA?

THere's one at Mitchell auto parts in Ranburn, AL, just across the border,
400 bucks for that one as well.

I called about the A&B one in Griffin,GA. They didn't know the mileage on it, so I'm still thinking about it. The ebay engine is $150, and shipping is about $150 extra, but the seller doesn't know about the mileage on that one either.

I'm still calling around to places, trying to figure out the best course of action. Automobile Atlanta has rebuilt and used engines, but they're asking around the $2000 range. That's a bit much in my opinion, since there is a complete 924 on the Atlanta criagslist for $1800. That car is tempting, but I still have my car and need to do something with it first.

I'm spending more time around Georgia than planned, but on the plus side, I've met some fun people over the past week.

Too bad you are not up this way, NH.

I would sell you my Weissach 924 motor with 100K on it for $500. It is complete with the clutch bell housing still in place. It took a 330 mile trip (running in the car it was in) before it was removed and the car was scrapped. We needed the transmission for another car.

I have never torn any of it down so I can not comment on its interals. I do not it did not smoke, started right up and ran great for those 330 miles. It has been sitting in my shed for about 1 year. Still has the oil in it. Come to think of it. I think I will turn it over by hand this week just to make sure all is still well.
