And I'm curious as to a few of the routine maintenance things on our cars.

I want to change all the fluids, but I'm a little worried about what problems could be caused by changing fluids that (for all I know) have never been touched. In particular, I'm worried about what'll happen if I change the trans fluid.

Basically, is there any fluid that if changed (when it had not been religiously changed by previous owners) that will do more harm than good?

I know it's a weird question, but I used to have a Ford Probe, and there WAS a problem with changing never-before-touched fluids

Just remember to loosen the transmission fill plug before removing the drain plug.
Never heard of tranny problems caused by new clean oil. +You'll probably notice it's quieter after changing.
You're way more likely to have problems due to not changing it.
Change all them nasty old fluids.

Brake fluid is also a wonderful thing to change out with fresh. Only concern there might be snapping off bleeder screws, but on the plus side, Porsche does a better job of coating bolts etc than Ford, so they're less likely to break off outright...

yeah, that's what i figured. I didn't want it to be like running a car with natural oil for 200k and then swapping to synthetic and blowing out the seals.

Hah. Nevermind, it was (of course) in the FAQ

IMHO, the trany fluid change pertains to a manual tranny. Automatics, you might not want to change the fluid so much
