|
|
Due to the fact that I'm in the middle of opening a new business and have seemingly less time each day to think, I haven't been spending much time online or in the garage with my 924... I took her out today for a drive to determine what was causing the latest issue that popped up which has her idling poorly and stalling when brought to a stop.
After lazy testing the lines (by spraying carb cleaner in specific areas) it seemed clear that the lines are fine. But when I spray the carb cleaner at the throttle body gasket my idle purrs up to 1k and sounds flawless...
So... the question is... Would you guys say this sounds like a gasket leak? And if so... anyone have any advice on the difficulty/time of the fix?
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Guys. _________________ '79 Porsche 924

You may have a throttle body gasket leak, but I doubt that is the cause of the "popping" and stalling. I would think something like that wouldn't cause that much of a problem. I would assume it has to do with your counter weight of something along those lines... _________________ =====>Alex<=====

It sounds like a vacuum leak of somesort, but I doubt that it is the TB gasket.
I would suspect some more like the idle screw is leaking, or the throttle shaft has worn-out and is leaking, or you have a vacuum hose leak, or the big rubber intake hose has a tear or crack in it. |

You can pull the TB off and coat the gasket with sealer to fix any leaks (qiuck fix). I agree with the others, that sounds like a vac leak or lean condition or both (lean could cause back fires). _________________ Rick

Throttle body gasket is easy to fix just using RTV gasket maker stuff, so you could do that pretty easily and eliminate a variable. However, your problem sounds much more like a major vac line leak, or possibly a crack in one of the rubber or plastic boots that connect to the TB. I have seen the rubber ones crack at the base of the ribs, which can be VERY difficult to see, particularly on any of the concave surfaces, as the concavity tends to "hide" the crack. You should probably remove all three pieces from the airbox to the TB and inspect them carefully, inside and out, all the way 'round, to make sure there are no cracks. Once you've ruled that out, start working on all of the vac lines. I'd strongly suggest just replacing everything. It costs about $60 or so to get enough silicone tubing to do a complete engine bay, and it's well worth the time and effort. It's not hard to do at all, although just a bit tedious.
The nice thing about doing all of that, is that even if it doesn't solve your problem, when you eventually find the root cause, the car will run much better than it did to begin with _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

For as long as I have owned my turbo I have had a leak at the 3 in round gasket or hose on the throttle body. I replaced it and still the same. I do get a little oil on the engine just under this hose. I have tightened it to the point of breaking it. I will use an adhesive the next time. Little oil not a big worry. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

thanks for all the input guys... and to think I was hoping this might be a straight forward issue... I'm beginning to wonder if that's a lot like a unicorn.
well it's the best time of year (in the northeast) to be out of commission so I suppose I'll attack those lines and see what happens!
Thanks again. _________________ '79 Porsche 924
