Here in England some mad enthusiasts take part in a strange form of motorsport called "trialing". This involves attempting to climb a variaty of steep and slipery hills in various types of cars, subdivided into classes eg front wheel drive, rear engine rear wheel drive (lot of Beetles), front engine rear wheel drive, etc.

I compete in a 924 which is highly modified. It sits about 4 inches higher than standard for extra ground clearance on 15 inch Beetle wheels, is stripped out but has 70 kilos of lead in the rear bumper plus carrying 4 spares, tools etc to give 400 Kilos on the front wheels, and 800 on the back. It is horrible to drive on the road, but boy can it climb.

The whole car is modified for maximum grip in steep muddy conditions. The only object is to get to the top of the hill, sometimes at a 45 degree angle. Speed is not involved except that you have to go flat out to get to the top. You rarely come out of first gear. Standard tyres (often down to 10 PSI) and no slippers allowed. Sump guards essential.

My car has a fully balanced engine and four branch manifold - about 140 bhp, and runs a snail gear box.

The reason I am on this forum is that I need more power. Much more power. I have bought a 924 turbo (two actually) which I wish to supercharge. My supercharger is a Mercedes part no A 111 090 03 80. I intend to fit it in conjunction with an after market mappable ignition system and special inlet manifold for maximum low down power and torque. Has any body any advice ?? I will also rebuild and fully balance and overbore the engine. How far can a balanced 924 rev to without blowing up ?? All help gratefully received

John

John
You need to track down two of your countrymen:
Simsport for supercharging
bass gt for hill climb and other race prep knowledge

There are probably others, but those two are the pre-eminent far-from-stock 924's that spring to mind, not only in the UK, but probably on the entire board. I think Rich H is also developing a supercharged NA, but I haven't conversed with him as much and I'm not sure how far along he is in his build. Anyway, those names should get you started.

And by the way, WE NEED PIX

Have you thought of using nitrous instead.

Hi. You should be safe to about 7k but that's about all.

As for your blower I dont know the model but if it came off a factory car it will prob have a dedicated casting with mounts etc to pick up on the Merc inlet. The ideal is a plain unit (M62 like I use) as you can modify the car and leave the blower casting alone.

If you want to email me I can send you a few details on how to get the project started...happy to share how etc . My car has an M62, intercooler, Motec management, M&W ignition a custom inlet and makes 240bhp on std 8.5:1 pistons and bores.

Cheers
Simon
