and how much of such batteries would you need for a decent range?

10....20? 1000?

I'd rather do a Sprite or a Midget with a 30hp PMG motor and 6 batteries. It'd have a 30 mile range or so, but it would weigh about 1500 lbs with me in it Big cars are too heavy to be electric, you need a lot of batteries to get a decent range which adds more weight, and then you get into the whole range/weight loop where you end up with a 150 mile range, but it handles like a brick, has no trunk space, and dims the whole town when you start charging it up

I don't agree with that. There's nothing which converts energy to motion as efficiently as electric motors. A combustion engine never gets an efficiency higher than 35% or something like that, while electric motors double that iirc. And they have max torque from zero rpm.

The problem is the storage of the electric energy...there are several ways... directly generating electricity by means of a fuel cell or store the electricity in batteries.
It's just a matter of upgrading the batteries so they are more efficient.

I agree that they are more efficant in their use of energy, put I'm talking about future use for better pollution and gas prices, most full electric cars plug into the grid to recharge, where do u think the power comes from, big mostly coal burning power plants, now electric is good but if there was a way to make them light weight long distance and self recharging without using the grid, then your golden

If we're all using "grid powered" cars then their effective pollution (from the power stations) is confined to a relatively small number of power stations. That's "small" as in small compared to the number of cars. You can then concentrate on cleaning up the power stations.

This argument of course ignores minor things like money.

Like the electric buses in Wellington, NZ! Except it makes overtaking maneuvers tricky...!
