If you have ugly or old stone guards, or maybe you just want to add some onto your car, then this walk-through is for you!
This is what my old cracked guards looked like before I started.
These are the supplies you will need to complete the task.
You'll notice I have two grades of sand paper; 80 grit and 320 grit, a can of truck bed coating, wash cloth, hair dryer, masking paper (any paper will do), chisel, masking tape, and a can of pepsi.
*NOTE* Use only Pepsi, Coke products may vary in results. *END NOTE*
FIRST - You want to mask around the area you will be removing as shown below.
SECOND - Plug in your hair dryer or heatgun and start heating up a corner of the old guard. After a few seconds use the chisel to slowly peal the guard away by shimmying while firmly pushing, as shown.
*NOTE* It's ok if you dig into the paint a little bit, it will be covered by the bed lining coating anyway.
THIRD - Once all of the old guard is removed use the 80 grit sandpaper to sand down through the excess glue.
FORTH - Use the 320 grit sandpaper to smooth out the paint.
FIFTH - Grab your wash cloth and get one side of it damp, once done use it to wipe off any excess paint, and dirt. Use the dry side to dry the area.
SIXTH - By now your original masking job is probably a little tattered as mine was, and you will need to patch any spots that you don't want to be sprayed. Once you've done this, you will need to mask off a larger area around the now removed guard to keep from spraying the rest of your car, as shown below.
*NOTE* My masking paper is black in some places because I reused it after doing the other side.
SEVENTH - Open can of Pepsi and take a huge drink, because by now you're probably pretty hot.
EIGHT - Now you're ready to spray. You need to shake the can for about two minutes after the ball inside is loose to make sure you get a good even coat. Next you want to spray a little onto the ground to make sure everything is coming out ok, it may come out clear at first but will quickly turn black. After this is done, you hold the can between 4 and 6 inches away from the to-be-painted area, and give it a few sprits going back and forth stopping when you reach each side. Don't spray to much at once or it may run causing a very unprofessional look. When the entire area is sprayed, let it dry for about 5 minutes and then spray again. I only used 2 coats but if you want a thicker guard then add as many coats as you desire.
EIGHT - After you've sprayed your final coat, let it dry for another 10 to 15 minutes, and then peal away the masking. It should look like this when you're done.
Ain't she a beaut!
Ok congratulations! You've just completed the task of replacing the stoneguards on your Porsche 944 or 924. Reward yourself and finish off that can of Pepsi!
Total time: Aprox. 1.5 - 2 hours.
Thank you for your time.

I don't look like a hippy. Can I still do the stone guards?
Looks sharp. How long do you think it will last, as in stay black, not fade etc? Bed liner should hold up well.
One question, why didn't you go right to the bottom? |

Thanks Paul.
First post back is insulting a guy who did a good DIY with pictures and shared it with everyone. Yup, sounds like Neil to me. That bastard! |

Awesome and funny guide, thanks!
I'm interested in some modifications to a few steps of the process though:
* Would I still get a good result if I replaced the pepsi with a beer? I think it would improve my level of refreshment. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

Neil - Haha I'm not a hippy, I just have fuzzy hair. I didn't go to the bottom because the old ones only went that far, but not a bad idea.
macBdog - Thanks for the complement. I dunno about your mod idea though, I guess it could work, just don't use too many or you may end up painting your guards on the wrong car (your neighbor may not be too happy).

Ok, I've finally got around to finishing painting the stone guards on my 944, I pulled the original ones down to the bottom of the car added some behind the front and rear wheels and then connected the front and the original with a stripe along the bottom, if you look close enough you can see it.
I hope this gives you guys some inspiration to try this, I think it worked out pretty well Best of luck.

I hope you don't mind me putting my two cents in.
With black paint you could touch up the line around the new cover. It may be my eyes but they look edgy.
If it was me I will go and have my eyes tested. I have them checked but then I could not see well. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

I see what you're saying. Actually, it's from the tape, I used white masking tape, but there are some places where I didn't sand very well and it chipped a little, so I do need to go over it again. This time instead of doing it one part at a time, I'm going to mask the entire thing and paint it with a semi-gloss black, just to make everything look more fluid. Thanks for the input
