--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone, my name is Dale from Sheboygan Wisconssin, and I live 6-miles from Road America Race Trak.. I just bought a 1977 924 silver with black interior. I’ll post pics at a later date

Ok, I drove the 924 home 100 miles and loved it, by the way this is my 1st Porsche and I plan on buying a 911 down the road sometime. I thought I checked all the lights, but I must have mistaken the brake lights with headlights/taillight.

When I got home I replaced all the bulbs with Salvinia 1156''''''''s and the one small with a 67W. I have turn signals and driving taillights but no brake lights or backup lights. I sanded down the "gang" grounding bracket where the 3-grounds meet and cleaned all the connection with electrical spray cleaner...but still no brake lights.

The car did not come with an owners manual so I’m not sure what fuse to look for...but the fuses under the dash all looked good.

Questions:

1. Can anyone shed some wisdom on the brake lights?

2. Are 1156 LL the correct bulbs? I tried a 21W/5W but it would not twist into the base plate because the "pins" are offset

3. Can the stock fuses be upgraded to Glass Fuses?

4. Where does everyone buy parts, Plug wires, distributer cap/rotor, spark plugs, etc. My 924 is running rough but I think it just needs a tune up.

5. Where can I purchase an owners manual. (Porsche .com

6. Could some one send me information on what fuses are for what circut? Or which fuse is for the break lights.

Thank you to all and I hope to hear from you soon. As always, when I find out how to fix a problem I will always post it for others.. I also own a 1991 SL300 Benz and a 1999 Lexus GS 400. I belong to other forums (Lexus/Benz) and I always find them helpful and like to share my info too.

Thanks Dale

It's time to buy a Haynes manual for the 924. They're about $28 Just about everything is covered there. It's become the 924 bible.

Thanks datatrain….the car came with Haynes manual but it does not give any detail on the fuse box as far as the “order” of 1 through 15 fuses, but that’s typical of Haynes when it comes to detail.

I'll keep watching for answers here, I have found a couple of posts with similar problems, but it seems the posters never finish the post when they when-and-if they find a solution.

Welcome to the board... I'm new here too but here's a little info for ya.

1.) If the fuse is good and the grounds are good, then I'd normally blame the bulbs.

2.) Don't know off the top of my head.

3.) Yes

4.) Try pelican parts.

5.) I found one (brand new) on ebay for $9.

6.) If no one else does, I'll do it when I get home and can check the manual. From memory though they're all 8, 16, and a couple 25's. I replaced all mine with glass and no problems.

If the fuse is good, most likely culprit is the switch.

Thanks JackRabbit

I did find out they are 8's and 16's and I bought some over my lunch hour. I need to know what each fuse controls...thanks in advace for any help.

Unrelated to the electrical issue: I also bought a distributor and rotor, NGK plugs and and oil filter. All at Advanced Auto and it was cheap.

I have been serching, but I find so many other interesting posts that I get backlogged! LOL

I just wish that when people post they would write back after they solve an issue. I've read many "issues" in the forum and they just die after a few comments back and forth.

Oh-well, they are still interesting.

When things stop working I spin the fuses in their position.
Usually its corroded ends.
Check the brake switch- most on the brake pedal but early ones on the master cylinder.
The fuse holders are numbered.

Welcome to the world of 924 Dale,
1. I agree it is most likely your brake lite switch, the"Bible" will cover this.
2. 1156 should be fine.
3. You would need to replace the whole fuse box, but the original style are easy to find and last just as well.
4. You can get parts just about any where, they may have to order them but no need to go all specialty store for them. (napa, autozone, buy rite are all fine)
5. I agree with everyone= E-bay
6. Someone else answered this one so
one last note...
You lucky bum living so close to Road America, We just met and I already hate you now

Last night I tuned it up NGK plugs, new distributor cap and rotor and oil change. It purrs like a kitten now. 3 of the four plugs were loose and I could turn them by hand.(???)

I redid the ends of the 6-wires that are attached to the bottom of the master brake cylinder, they were all corroded and spliced together. I was hoping this would take care of the “no brake light” issue, but it didn’t.

So far I checked the fuses, changed the “all” the light bulbs, cleaned the rear grounding posts, and rewired the master cylinder. Where is this “switch” everyone is referring too…I can’t find a post in the forum. And until I get a owners manual…could some one post a picture of the page in the manual that shows what amp fuses go where and what the control?

Living close to Road America is great. This past weekend they had another Vintage car race and parade, it was a lot of fun. The SCCA run-off is coming next month, should be a week of great racing.

Thanks

Dale

i believe the switch everyone is referring to is located on the underside of the master cylinder(there are actually 2, they screw in). theyre gold in color and they both have 2 wires attached to them.

btw i also have a '77 with no brake lights, thats why i clicked this thread.

i have 2 new switches ready to install just havnt had the time.

Good morning Chickenwing,

I actually had 3-wires to each of those switches for a total of 6 wires. The round connector was very corroded and 4 of the 6 wires were spliced together. I put new “ends” on all six wires, and cleaned the connectors. Still no lights….

Where did you buy the switches? And does the brake fluid run out when you change those??? Is there a way to test the switches?

Thanks for the feedback chickenwing. Together we will conquer this demon!! lol

To James' point, a quick search using the terms "brake light switch" and clicking the "search for all terms" button yields 2 pages of results. Here are some of the more interesting ones. I'm pretty sure you'll find answers in one or more of these threads...
