Does anyone know if there are other cars that use the same fuel accumulator or compatible accumulators. I'm getting an NA 80 924 back together and am in the process of rebuilding the fuel lines. The accumulator looks shot, but replacements seem a bit steep, just wondering what my options are.

three questions

One: did you unscrew the screw on the bottom a little and see if fuel came out? If it does then its stuffed

Two: Do you have 2 accumlators or one? (someone will probably know because of the year but I dont)

Three: how much is steep?

pretty much screwed if you need new accumulator(s) as far as replacements go, easy to spend several hundred on them and not many alternatives. However, rumor has it certain mercedes accumulators are of similar spec, though not direct, fittings are different. If you swap out the fuel lines id bet something could be cobbled together to work.

This woul not supprise me, I have noticed a few other thingss on Mercedes at the self serve wrecking yard that look like they would fir the 924 with little or no mod so maybe this is worth a try.

What about a home-made accumulator? Could you just put a sealed piece of pipe in the fuel line like plumbers do for water supply lines? Seems to me this would do the same thing as an accumulator, but it's easily within the realm of cheap DIY'ers.

To use parts all rated for fuel system use, I could easily imagine a T-fitting, with the base of the T pointing upwards into the bottom of a fuel filter, with the top of the fuel filter capped. The air within the fuel filter would act as a spring to maintain fuel pressure with the pump off. If there's insufficient volume, a 2nd could be used. It's a great use for old fuel filters!

A filter body with the elements removed would be preferable of course. . .

The accumulator has an internal rubber bladder that holds pressure in the system after shutdown (aids in hot starts) and smooths fuel flow. When the bladder ages and rips, it leaks fuel, hence when you loosen the screw on the bottom of a failed accumulator fuel drips out. Making one may be slightly outside the skills of the average home mechanic.

It's definately shot, I took the screw out and fuel ran out for a good 30 seconds. Looks like I'll be getting a new one

Those guys have excellent prices. Alternators and starters are cheap compared to what I usually see.

Another place I found that has reasonable prices is the PartsBin.com Got a complete exhaust system 183 bucks

Fuel accumulators for cars up to 1978 are about $100 then for 1979 onwards the price jumps to around $250. No idea why the jump n price but the AutoHaus Az prices are still amongst the best.

The early 924s have two of 20cc accumulators while the later (79+) have only one 40cc unit. Still no justification for the vast price difference though.
