Sometimes you get lucky:
I bought this June 1982 924 for my son on Oz ebay three weeks ago for $2,010 plus $200 to have it trailered from Canberra to Sydney. Here it is as advertised:
The major things it needed was a new front bumper, front seats repaired and odometer fixed. I had a spare bumper from a silver car and a good pair of seats already so tidying it up was easy. It had mounts for bonnet/hood struts so for $50 I put on a set of those. It passed the NSW safety/emissions inspection first time.
It's a great runner; perfect cold sarting and only occasional hot-start problems but not enough of a problem to put on a list.
Here's how it looked today:
And for those of you into google Street View here's a typical north Sydney street scene

Yes, it's his first car. He got his driver's license 3 months ago. He's very happy. It's interesting and a bit sad that he is the only one in his circle of friends who can drive a manual-transmission car.
Nobbi,
Here's a better picture of the red car http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=23940&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=167 _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Driving a stick is a dying skill, I've only ever owned stick shifts. Even my pickup is a stick shift, which is fairly rare.

Nice looking car and lucky kid!
I don't understand why anyone serious about driving cars wouldn't want to drive a stick. For one thing it's just more fun, and for another you get more control over the car.
I guess maybe it's all just a matter of opinion and preference. Anyone here actually prefer to drive automatics? If so, why? _________________ 1988 924S Navy Blue - Phone Dials |

That looks like a very nice car now. Excellent value.
He is indeed a lucky kid.
Not questioning your judgment but trust that you have imparted a greater sense of maturity and responsibility than I and my mates had as teenagers.
Hope he can afford the insurance. |

Very nice Peter ! My son took my 931 back with him to college. I don't think he believed me when I told him to go ahead and take it. _________________ Matt

Peter do you want a slightly older son to adopt. I am available.
I too bought the 924S for my son. Then sold it to the PCA region Pres. and now it is a track car. 1988 no sunroof. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Osteoarthritis of the left knee? Sitting in traffic holding the clutch is painfull.
My work car is a stick but the clutch is real soft being hydraulic. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

One of the first things I told my son when he was learning to drive was "if you want to drive any of my cars you need to know how to drive a manual transmission". I suppose most kids drive automatics because that's what their parents drive.
Insurance for him is expensive. The insurance companies see a driver under 25 in a Porsche and go into a feeding frenzy.
I think a 924 is a good car for a young driver; it's solid, handles well, looks good, has enough power and with only two usable seats you don't have to worry about mates in the back seat yelling "go faster go faster". The only real problem is other drivers on the road who all seem to want to race you or tailgate you. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Nice car, and I agree with your sentiments re young drivers in a 924. Mandy talked me into keeping my 944 and staying on the lookout for more 924s because, she says, "Well, the kids are going to want cars someday, and these are good ones." _________________ '84 944 - kid blew motor
