Hey guys,

I have picked up a worrying noise...

It only happens under engine braking at 3k revs or over and it sounds like a wheel bearing on its way out but louder. Its not a wheel bearing as they are all pretty new (One installed last night) and it sounds like its coming form the engine bay.

Any ideas? I'm worried its something major...

Rich

Checked you engine mounts, Rich?

Just a suggestion.

No, not yet, but I will!

Seemed odd that it would happen on decel only though.

The oil was low... Still had pressure but it was on the bottom of the dipstick, so the other dipstick (me) has filled it up, hopefully that will fix it and I have't done any damage...

Might explain it, but I'll find out on the way home tonight.

If its all gone horribly wrong then I have found a local place to grind the crank on my spare engine, £80 + VAT which works out at just over £10 per bearing, not bad I reckon. Just need to get it balanced and then the block skimmed.

Then I'll just need to hone it, fit new rings, a full gasket set and rebuild it

first thing that popped into my head was thrust bearing, throw-out bearing, or torque tube bearings...

STOP!

Went back to what I did last night, wheel bearing and adjusted the rear drums...

To adjust the drums wind them out until they meet the drums ad the WIND THEM BACK IN A BIT!

Seems I forgot the last bit... In the words of James May (UK Top Gear) What and utter Cock!

Fixed!

UPDATE:

That last fix didn't solve the noise...

However despite torquing up the hub nuts after a rear shoe change (2' bar x 14 stone tight what ever that is in ftlbs) apparently when I jacked up the car to do the wheel bearing it re-seated itself properly and there was 1/4" play on the drivers side wheel

Took it apart and put the impact gun on it at feckmethatisdamntight setting for a bit. Seems to have fixed it for now... Probably have to cut it off next time

Got to the bottom of it finally and the bearings don't appear to have suffered.

Rich
