Power steering on a standard 924 ?

I'm about to do the 5 stud wheel conversion on my standard 924, I have a complete Oval Dash 944 as a donor car and wonder how on earth i'm going to park it with even bigger & fatter wheels - the steering is heavy as it is !

Has anyone fitted power steering to a 924 ?

Any tips/advice appreciated ?

Think the 924S has PA steering.

I have a 13" momo corse wheel on my 941 with 7" cookies & it is a b**** to steer at low speed. I looked into an electric power steering system made by DC Electronics, but they are STUPID expensive, like more than most 924s are worth.

That would be a sweet mod, to rig up a power steering rack from like a VW or 924S/944...

OK so what's with the problem with hooking up the rack? it bolts to the K frame, i'm assuming, and the 944 k fits in the 924... obviously you'd have to come up with brackets for the pump, but... would the power rack not clear in the 24 with a 44/24S K?

i'm just musing...i still have skinny 205's on my car and i'm not worried about it...

Mounting 924S/944 rack to 924 is problematic. Hooking up the pump is not if you have crank pulley with 2 or more grooves for belt.

Better option is to look for electric power steering on newer volkswagens iirc, and to use 944 or 924S rack. Still needs to be fabricated to fit on 924.

OK, so I had opportunity to pick up a used 924S rack + cross member as a "spare" for my 924S. Just arrived today. The short answer is that the cross members (as I think most of knew already) have significantly different mounting points on the chassis. Also, the steering rack mounting points are a centimeter or so further apart on both sides on the 924S rack vs. the early manual rack. And to complicate things further, the steering shaft itself is a few inches shorter on the 924S setup. So the simple answer is that on a stock vehicle, mounting a 924S/944 rack is not an easy proposition by any stretch.

...HOWEVER...

On a heavily modified car (such as my UWB project) I believe it might be possible to mount up the rack in one of at least three possible approaches:
1. fabricate adapter brackets to mount the 2.5L rack to the 2.0L cross member
2. modify the 2.0L cross member itself
3. modify the chassis to accept the 2.5L cross member

I was already considering modifying the 2.0L cross member to make a 3-pc setup such that the oil pan could be dropped without requiring other heavy lifting (similar to the stock 60s era Rustang cross members). As for mounting the later aluminum cross member to the chassis, I'm sure it could be done, but definitely would require some fairly significant fabrication, and some of the geometry of that unit is pretty different, and might cause interference issues with the motor itself...tough to judge after a 5 minute examination, and without an assembled motor to test fit.

For now, the first two options are on the table for me right now. I can't promise any immediate results on this, but it's definitely something I'm going to investigate further and either figure out or eliminate as not worth the effort.

Mounting the rack on the pump I don't see as a significant challenge...I think it can be done with some fairly basic fabrication. The bigger question is going to be the geometry of the steering shaft, and determining if either one can be made to work. We'll see where this goes next week when I get some more time to exercise the noggin.

It seems that the easier answer would be to find a proper VW Rabbit power rack and adapt the pump to the engine.

Another thought would be to use an electric power steering pump from a later model Toyota MR-2.

Since you are in Europe, what about looking for a wrecked or very cheap 1985 924 NA to scavenge from. The 1985 year introduced powersteering as standard, IIRC, as well as heated nozzles for the windshield washing fluid.

I have seen quite a bit of 1985 924 NA's but none of them had power steering on them.

Is there someone with such an option?

Suggestions on model years would be helpful...

Re: the Toyota rack, there are a variety of electric power steering racks out there for other makes and models. The strict EPAS setups require an ECU, which rules that out for most of us. OTOH, an electric-hybraulic pump would be very attractive, and in fact I think the 924S rack could easily be adapted to be run off of any number of E-H pumps. I've initially looked at some of the units that run on the Golf GTIs. However, IMO, the 924S really doesn't appear at first blush to be that difficult, and the added bonus is that all of the rest of the geometry is correct WRT the tie rods and steering shaft, etc. Since my project will already have a 944/51 suspension setup, the rack should be direct bolt on for those interfaces, whereas there would be a lot of unknowns, investigation and possibly engineering to figure out with a VW (or other make) rack.
