|
|
I did some searching, but the search function her has a mind of it's own, or I am just typing in the wrong search words!
I need to remove the front screen on my 924, as the frame is rusted, and I will have to do some fix and paint work. As I will have to pull it all out, I was wondering if the more up-to-date 944 rubber would fit with the old 924 screen - as in the 924 CGT?
Has anyone given this a go? _________________ Kroggers

yea very interesting...i'd want to change to the late style windshield too as at higher speeds the sound of the air going trough those gaps is unpleasent. _________________ Supercharger and EFI kits

Kroggers,
If you want to fit the late style 944 trim then you must fit the late 944 windscreen as this screen has a moulding on the back of it to sit the screen further out from the frame (so that it is flush with the body). You also need to grind off the mounting pegs for the early style trim clips and you need to fit late 944 wiper arms.

Thank you Bruce, that is the type of information I was looking for. The screen on my 924 is all fogged and looking bad - I have to remove the trim and fix rust etc, and I do not believe I will be able to get it all out for the fix and not damage the screen completely - so I am preparing myself to replace everything.
Do you happen to have additional details on what will be required - part numbers, and maybe some pictures? A long shot I know, but worth asking _________________ Kroggers

Kroggers,
I don't have the part numbers, but all you need is to ask your screen supplier for a late 944 screen (post 86) this will come with the moulding bonded to it. The rubber seal is available from Porsche and from memory is pretty cheap. The wiper arms will swap straight over from any late 944/968 but remember that they need to come from a left hand drive car as the right hand drive late 944s had the wiper motor on the opposit side. When you remove your old screen you will be left with small trim pegs ( they look like nail heads) all around the screen surround, just chisel or grind these off, finally late 944/968 have 2 plastic bocks mounted at the base of the screen which the base of the screen sits against, so try and get these from your breakers yard when you source the wipers. You could even use the 944 aerial booster and use the screen mounted radio aerial whilst you're at. It does make a really smart upgrade to the car though especially if you are needing to change the screen any way.

Good stuff Bruce... On the wiper, do I need the complete assembly with the motor etc, or just the actual wiper arms? The car is a UK car, so I will have to obtain these from the UK then.
I had a look at the screen today, and removed the trim. All the clips were extensively rusted (but everything else was in good order). As expected, I cracked the screen on the drivers side, so I must get a new screen now. I will keep a look out for a second-hand screen and wiper etc. _________________ Kroggers

Just a thought, but as the 944 screen is the bonded in variety, I suspect there is no chance of picking on up second hand - this is a once only install item? _________________ Kroggers

Kroggers,
If you find a breakers yard with a car in, then either get a local screen company to remove the screen or cut it out yourself (use stainless wire like a cheese wire to cut it out). If any of the moulding is damaged then you can build it back up with screen adhesive before you refit the screen. I've used plenty of secondhand screens in the past with great success. The only thing you can't re-use is the rubber screen trim. If you get the screen out yourself go to a local motor factors and buy some 3M Sikaflex urethane adhesive and you can bond the screen back in yourself.
Even though you have a UK right hand drive car you still need to fit late left hand drive wiper arms as all early cars had lhd wipers as standard, it wasn't until the face lifted 944 that rhd wipers were used. You can fit the later rhd wiper assembly if you want, but the battery will need moving first.

Thank you Bruce, this is really valuable information and extremely helpful. I am still a bit confused by the wiper change. Are you saying that all I will require is the 944 wiper arms, or do I need to get the motor and other parts as well?
Porsche and breakers yard do not go together here in Sweden. I would be extremely lucky to find a breakers yard here in Sweden who has a 944. Possibly an early 924...
That is why I have to date obtained all my parts from the UK - transporting a screen is probably not much fun from England to Sweden though!!!
I am driving over to see family in Rickmansworth during August and picking up all the 944 suspension parts that I have obtained to date, so might make a trip to some yards to see what i can find whilst I am there
Got your PM, and I am sure you will hear from me in the future _________________ Kroggers

If you want to keep your 924 wiper motor and mechanism (on the left hand side of the car - whether lhd or rhd) then you only need to swap the arms over - late 944 arms have a different profile to clear the screen. The late arms are a straight swap and will fit with either screen.
