Hi Khal, the Carsson was a low pressure system, but the later turbo's are a high pressure system. This has resulted in good constant power through the rev range. Also post 1993 cars(2.0 & 2.3 models) share the GM/Vauxhall Bellhousing pattern.
I know the builds in the Porsche through the rev range, but it still only produces 120BHP. Whereas the saab engine produces 200BHP as standard, with 350BHP easily obtainable without any major work.
Practical Performance Car Magazine here in Britain is currently doing a feature on fitting this engine into a MKI Ford Escort, Using a Vauxhall Omega 5-speed box.
I'm planning on using the Porsche torque tube and gearbox, by making an adapter plate, or cutting and welding the bellhousing on the turque tube. I plan to use a multi-plate competition clutch |

If you have a few engine transplants under your belt, and you're handy enough with spanners, then something like Raceboy's done should achievable for you. He's added a turbo to his NA and is getting around 200hp at the rear wheels.
I reckon it might be 'easier' than an engine swap...
EDIT:

I always drove the 9000 a bit like a diesel! It felt like the power built from, like, 1,500rpm through to 3-and-a-bit, maybe 4,000rpm. It was a proper shove at those low rev's. So I'd short-shift it and it'd really boogie
You're talking about the power building through the rev range, right? The NA only has 120-odd horsepower but -as you may be aware -the 924 Turbo has over 170hp. With the potential to easily (assuming you're handy enough with the spanners) get over 200hp.
I won't do obvious and suggest you just buy a 924 Turbo (oh, how I want to suggest that! ) but as mentioned above, putting a turbo on your NA might be worth looking at, seeing as you're looking at an engine swap anyway... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Buy a Turbo car!!!!! Where's the fun it that!?!?!?!?!? It's alot more fun to build it(i like the risk of blowing the engine!!!). After a good look at the swap i'm thinking of going down either the Audi v6/v8 swap or turbo the N/A route. Still deciding. The Saab Turbo option is still there but is coming in 3rd place to the other 2 at the moment ,because of work commitments, i have less time for the swap.
I've got until next summer to finish it, that's when i'm planning a high-speed run from Land's end to John O'Groats (Cannonball Style). Buy then it has to be fast enough and reliable enough to do 850 miles at an average speed of over 90MPH. |

Some people just have to do it themselves. I can appreciate that. Not my thing but if you've just gotta, well...

Yeah, I was puzzled by the idea of the SAAB engine swap. Kinda odd

You are aware that even the kneecapped 95hp Yankee versions will cruise all day long at 100mph? (assuming good running condition... and the roads to suit, of course). 850 miles is a little less than Brisbane to Sydney and back. A well sorted bog-stock toofah would do that without you even breaking a sweat.
I guess you're up against the clock (and maybe the odd TVR?) and you're after blistering acceleration so you can keep up? Any of the swaps you suggest would likely give you what you're after. But is it really necessary? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

The main reason i was looking at the SAAB engine is quite simple if you live here, There is about 7 junk yards within 5 miles of me. In each 1 there's got to be 2-4 old SAAB 9000's most of which are turbo's. So over here a SAAB turbo engine is quite cheap and easy to find. They are 200BHP as standard and with a bit of work on the standard parts, you can see 300+BHP. So for less than £500, i could have a 300BHP 924. Whereas i could spend that much on just a turbo on the N/A engine, or £500 on just buying the AUDI engine then i still have to fit it.
So over here it would be the cheap option. It would just be more work to fit, but nothing major. |

See if you can find Practical Performance Car Magazine, it is the junk yard tuner's favourite read in the UK.
They have:
A 27 liter meteor tank engine in a Rover SD1
A Track day turbo Rolls Royce
A V8 ford transit van
A Saab Turbo Engine in a Mk 1 Escort

What about the north/south mounted Saab 16 valve 2.1 turbo motor? Not worth the trouble? They are canted over at about 45 degrees, just that the power shaft exits at the front of the engine and is routed back through to the trans. under the engine. Ancillaries are in the back by the firewall.
Maybe too effed up to deal with.
I was looking at the site you mentioned, Practical Performance. Nice magazine, I love that kind of thing, but the price for overseas subscription is a bit £80 per year for across the Atlantic.
Jay Leno's tank car with a 30 liter WWII Patton Tank V-12.

Nah, you may as while buy a Subaru by the time you have finished.
the flat four/six would be nice though, but I doubt it'll go between the chassis legs. Been looking on and off, but not managed to find the numbers and find a tape measure at the same time.... _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

Another project of mine is along the lines of Leno's car, except we're using a 19litre Magirus Deutz V12 Diesel!!!!
I did also think of pulling all the running gear out an making a 2.8 Audi Quattro powered 924, but after having a serious look it would be too much work to move the gearbox into the tunnel to drive the front wheels.
Now not using the Saab idea due to time , but i'm now looking at swapping in the running gear(5-stud hubs, gearbox and torque tube) off of my damaged 924S. Then at a later date swap in a 2.8 Audi V6.
I will be starting a new thread on this, does anyone know is any pitfalls i may come across in doing this swap? |
