i took my 931 out for a quick drive after work today drove it about ten minutes or so came back home pulled into the garage shut it off, just for the hell of it decided to start it back up and the starter stayed engaged after the car started so i shut the key off and the car stayed running and the starter stayed engaged so i put it in gear with foot on brake and let the clutch out to stall it but it just kept trying to start so i put it in 5th gear and engaged the e brake and tried to get the battery cable undone the whole time it was still trying to start by the time i got the cable unhooked i had a big cloud of smoke and that burned electronics smell all coming from the back side of the engine (kind like where the starter is) i forgot to add the whole time it was doing this i tried putting the key in and out off and on thinking the ignition was stuck, but i think something else was going on now i probably fried the starter and maybe some other things ...what do you guys think? let me know
thanks....ken

Probably a stuck starter solenoid.

I'd second that frozen solenoid theory - if stuck in the engaged position it would not only continually operate the starter and turn the engine, but also provide the ignition with power to run through it's #16 post.
If you were successful at stopping the engine and starter by putting it in gear and engaging the e-brake, then the electrics burning smell was the starter and/or the heavy gauge wires to being roasted.

Power to the starter comes directly from the battery. Once the solenoid is engaged, power to the 16 post also comes directly from the battery - http://www.pelicanparts.com/944/electrical/924_78_1_1.jpg

I would also replace the heavy cable that runs from the positive post of the battery to the starter solenoid.

im not to fond of non factory replacement parts, besides there is a company that ive been dealing with for 18 years that all they do is rebuild starters and alternators, and ive never had any problems
i would rather have mine revamped than buy some cheap autozone starter

Your choice, but if it smoked be prepared for your rebuilder to laugh.

With the 931 you have more starter options open to you. The 944 starter fits, spins in the same direction, is a bit smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

The solenoid being stuck is still only a most-likely, educated guess - there's at least a small possibility that it's an ignition switch problem. They're cheap enough that I'd replace it too, even if it's not the problem, if you don't know how old it is (rather than wait for it to strand you somewhere).

it will probably happen again real soon. Mine had been doing the same thing. I replaced the solenoid...still had problem. I replaced the ignition switch...still have the same problem. I decided to try shimming...still had the problem. So now the starter is in the shop to see what the heck is going on.

I never had the burning smell and I could always turn off the motor. I just had to pull the battery terminal to make the starter stop

This sounds kooky and I've given the same reply on a couple of other threads but I had real wonky starter issues on my 931 - sticking on and not starting. Seems there was a short - put some insulating grease on the nuts and everything is fine. Been that way for months now.
