Hey all,
I'm checking out one of those air-cooled wonders and the one I'm looking at has some discoloration spots under the clear coat on one of the fenders - apparently from acid rain damage.

Do any of you body/paint gurus know how to deal with this? Are there any alternatives to just repainting the fender?

Thanks!
nick

I think I have a similar problem on my 928. It's really weird, because it's like the clearcoat is permeable...when it rains or gets wet otherwise, then gets exposed to sun, it's like the water migrates thru the clearcoat and creates water spotting. You can literally see the different patterns under the clear, and they change over time. Bizarre.

Sorry, not a paint expert, so I can't recommend a solution. I've tried multiple doses of paint cleaner, treatment, rubbing compound, waxing, buffing, etc. I can get the paint to shine up really nice, but as soon as it gets wet again, the problem comes back.

I bet you're looking at an SC. They had awful clear coating for a few years in there. The only solution is to sand it off.

Actually, it's a '91 C2

The rest of the paint looks excellent, just the top of one fender. It looks like there are dark spots under the clear. The clear coat on top is perfectly smooth and shiny.

From what I've been able to dig up this is acid rain damage. The chemicals permeate the clear coat and discolor the color coat. It seems that a respray is only real solution but I was curious if anyone was familiar with this.

FAST! I just started re-tuning after putting in some giant new injectors. Up to just over 13psi now and I can already feel the extra power over 12psi. 5th gear on the highway presses you in the seat and really takes off. The engine makes all kinds of harmonious sounds. I may be the only person on the planet who wishes they could drop a 924 engine in a 964!

Still, adding a modern a/c, power seat, power steering, 250hp cabriolet to the stable is tough to resist. Too bad they're so slow.

Indeed, lots of adjustments since then. I'll work on it.
