I think you should be able to accomplish it with a curved needle such as the one in the link. Take your time and depends on the quality of the leather left on the wheel. Mine was shot so I just removed it. The wheel was a standard no-wrapped kind under it.

Use a very strong upholstery thread or twine. _________________ '77 Yellow 924 |

If attempting it, mine had glue under it to stop it from sliding or rolling. I'm not sure what kind to use but a good water proof type for crafting or fabrics should do. Check the smell as it will eminate off it for a while before it dries.
Makes sure to pull the leather good and tight, but don't tear it with the string. I've only done it once to patch a cover and it was a pita. Patience is as always most important. _________________ '77 Yellow 924 |

To make it look good you should use a cross stitch, this requires 2 curved needles. Get the heaviest thread they have at the local fabric shop... upholstery thread will work. You thread both of the needles then tie the 2 thread ends together. Then you stitch it kinda like you're tying your shoes, its a bit more complex then that but similar. Its time consuming but rewarding when finished. I redid my entire wheel and it came out looking great. _________________ 1981 931 GT (CGT Intercooled)

I re-stitched mine. It was pretty average to start with, but I got better at it as I went along. So the last bit I did is OK, but the first bit is a bit ropey . But I can't bring myself to un-pick it all to start again. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

I re-covered mine with a new factory replacement skin (from AGLA) - but it was my first one, and so I didn't quite get it as nice-looking as I'd hoped. Still better than before! Using the 2-needle approach would probably have worked better.
Doing the shift knob was much easier!
And now I'll be getting rid of the wheel at some point, since I want to switch over to a Momo wheel or the like... _________________ Vaughan Scott
