Hey all,
These bodywork blemishes have been bugging me for a little while now, so I decided to do something about it.
Thought I'd ask for some advice on how best to go about patching these areas up...
I bought the correct alpine white spray and primer....and today I set to work, uncovering a few patches of rust. I found these 4 areas that I want to fix:
A Closer look at Area 1:
Area 2 - front indicator/repeater mount:
Area 3:
Area 4 - rear wheel arch:
I've done this type of work before but only on easy flat areas such as AREA 2 and 4 in the photos above. (using body filler, then primer and then paint with wet n' dry sanding between stages)
I'm not really sure what materials to use on AREA 1, and 3 to rebuild the holes and bridge the missing/broken sections. Fibreglass putty with the fine metal mesh?!? chemical metal?
Also, on area 4 my car has a different/darker shade of white for the lower section. Where would I find the code for this colour? or should I just try and get it mixed up by the paint people (by eye), for the rear wheel arch repair.
Hope that makes sense?
Thanks everyone

You might be able to weld a piece of metal on those cancer spots on your fender. Then I would smeer some bondo over them. Then prime & paint. It might also be cheaper to just replace the whole fender. So do some math and see which comes out ahead.
Hope this helps  _________________ =====>Alex<=====

I would suggest seeing if you can buy an intact front fender from a parts car or junkyard and then sanding/painting that and replacing hte one you have. Replacing it is a lot less of a hassle than filling holes is, and with rust like that, replacing the panel is probably the only way to really make it go away.
fwiw, I have a big dent and some surface rust on my pass. side front fender, and I got a fender for $75 to fix both in one shot _________________ '87 924 S - No sunroof and a few modifications |

if youre really keen on patching 3 yourself try this
1)make sure all the rust is removed ALL THE RUST
2) bend a small peice of aluminium mesh to shape
3) tie a small piece of wire to the centre of the mesh and put a small amount of filler on two opposing sides of the mesh
4) push the mesh through the hole to the interior side of the hole, and hold the small piece of wire pulling it slightly till the filler cures and holds the mesh in place
5)fill over the mesh with body filler, sand prime and paint _________________ 1979 NA

Scorpio, excellent....that's what I was after. I had forgotten about the mesh being held in place with the wire in the middle! Neat.
Out of interest I took the car to a body shop and enquired about Area 1 alone....and got quoted a £200 with no guarantee it wouldn't return in a few months (of course.)
Can buy a new panel...and have it sprayed....and I might later on.....but I wanted to at least have a go myself first.
I am giving myself more work to do.....but I love it...and really enjoy working on my 924.
I recently reupholstered my seats too and will be posting a full pictorial on how I did it too real soon. Just gotta fit those carpet sides to the centre console and then take some final pics.
Hey Morghen, I managed to locate a good 924 steering shaft...with no play in the upper UJ ....hehe lucky me!
Thanks everyone

I gotta agree with scorpio also though intact fenders are good also though you gotta worry about painting a bigger area. Ive been there.
My imput is to use light weight easy sand body filler way better than
what ya call it bondo. might tis well be usen concrete. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

You guys are off your freakin rocker! Replace the fender it's junk!
You can't fix rust holes with fiber tape and bondo..thats like fixing an exhaust with black tape. It just won't hold.
If you really wanted to fix the fender properly you would have to remove it first. Once you had it off you could go to work cutting out all the rust with a zip cut. You would have to sandblast ALL other rust. Then make steel patches
to fit in the holes and WELD them in place with a mig.
All this effort would not come close to just swapping in a good fender. It would be faster cheaper and you will be MUCH happier with the result. _________________ 1976 924

not all of us have the luxury of readily available fenders sitting around our back yards .... hence the bush mechanics
And FYI swapping in a replacement panel has its own problems..eg colour matching...re spraying to match paint colour and tone .... _________________ 1979 NA

FYI by the time you repair all the spots you cannot get away with not painting the entire fender anyway.
What would you do?? Just rattle can the repair areas? That would look sharp _________________ 1976 924

Dont bother trying to fix the wing, it really is junk.
As for the rear, grind back to good metal. A couple of skims of filler then prime and paint. |

Fenders go for £80+ over here, so its not as easy as it would first appear.
There are quite a few of us over here hanging on for cheap ones!
If its junk already you can't do any harm by trying to fix it!! _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...
