hay guys my name is Chris i live in Eugene Oregon in the us i purchased my Porsche 924s about 6 months ago i love the thing im glad i found a place where i can talk about it because this place was hard to find.

my question is i want to get more hp with out switching out my engine what would be the top say 5 or 10 things i could do. im getting tired of these punk kids in there little Honda civics trying to race me i first need to get some power then let me run into them.

my car only has 84,000 original miles on it so the engine is good the only problem its a automatic which sucks but that cool i have the remote start and makes driving layied back not worrying about changing gears.

i started reading back post but im over whelmed wow i must say there is alot to read on this board and it looks like im going to be here for a while reading. and learning if there is somebody with in Oregon maybe we can get together some time and help each other out working on cars. thanks all Chris

Welcome aboard.

Lots of stuff you can do to the 924S. But I'm lead to believe that serious performance mod's can get quite expensive, relative to the value of the car. It's a somewhat sad fact that any new car that even hints at having performance pretensions will probably be at least the equal of any 924 (NA, Turbo, S), certainly when it comes to a traffic-light Grand Prix, especially if said 924 has an auto trans. They're 20-plus-year-old cars, what're ya gonna do?

I suggest you race punk kids who've taken Mum's minivan for quick spin... But not the top of the line Odyssey, it'll probably pants you, too!

Seriously, the new Honda Civic Coupe Si has a good 30 to 40 more horsepower than your 924S, a good 1,500rpm more to play with and a close-ratio, six-speed 'box. And it doesn't weigh much more than your 924S. You're not gonna see which way those punk kids went off the lights... at least, not without a turbo- or supercharger...

You're new, so, don't worry, we're not being unhelpful. We just like to take a dig at the noobs sometimes, inject a dose of reality

What you've got there is an old, old sports car with, at best, a moderately powerful engine pushing through an old, old three-speed slush 'box. Even when it was new it wasn't exceptionally quick. Adequate, yes. But nothing more. With the slush 'box I'd be surprised if she'd even light the rears...
It's just a nice, comfortable, and exceptionally fun to drive sports car (at least, they are when they're in good condition). It's best appreciated as such. It's no quarter-mile hero.

The rub is, as cheap as these cars are now, you're probably better off not dumping relatively large sums of money into that car. If you're really after something that'll wipe the smirk off those punk kids faces, sell it and get a 944 Turbo (a.k.a. 951). And better still, get a 944 Turbo S! That'll show 'em
Unless you need a slush 'box? I'm pretty sure the Turbos never had 'em.

Of course, I add the usual disclaimer: If you're just a hardcore modder and you have the time/money/skills/facilities, then go for it! A good ol' supercharger is probably not a terrible option. I don't know of any threads on the subject but I'm sure they're around here somewhere... anyone? From what I've seen, it's just not something that's done very often on 924S's...

thanks for the heads up this is the first porsche i have owned i love the way this thing handles in town and on the open road i just wish i had more get up and go. the 944 turbo looks very nice wish i had the $18,000 to pick one up i paid 3,700 for my 924s

I'd be surprised if you had to pay more than about US$10,000 for a decent one? This one didn't look bad, just as an example. I grant you, you'd probably be lucky to find 944 Turbo S for sale. And it wouldn't be 924S cheap. I was half joking on that one.

It could easily cost that again for the kind of performance upgrades I suspect you're looking for. So, seven-and-a-bit grand and counting... know what I mean?

You could try posting a heads-up to this thread in the 924S forum, make it a little more visible to people who know...

Nah, factory 2.5 header is more than enough. And as Khal said, these days you can get a damn nice 951 for under $10k.

maybe ill start looking for a 951 and start saving up money in the mean time. the link you posted that is a nice clean one to. are they runing around 300 hp stock?

Depends on the year and model, but closer to the low side of 250 I believe.

That's well over double the 924 N/A though, for an otherwise similar car.

If your ultimate goal is Big Horsepower and Fast then yeah, the 924S is not really the best car to start with. A 944 Turbo (951) is a far better platform. Hell, for that matter, a 924 Turbo (931) is arguably a better platform, depending on your budget...

Yeah, that looked like a good one. Bit far from you, of course. I don't know the best place to look for one in Oregon. But those kind of cars are out there, just keep an eye open. 944 Turbos are not excedingly rare but you should be prepared to patient when looking for a good example and also be prepared to pay top dollar... people who own genuinely good examples tend to know what they're worth. If you're serious about getting a 944 Turbo (951), you might like to check out Rennlist and perhaps Clark's Garage, too.

No, nowhere near it. As far as I know, they start at a quoted 217hp and the Turbo S is 247hp by the book, apparently. Because you can 'chip' them, it is certainly easier to get more horsepower immediately than it is with the 924S (not to mention they're 60-odd horsepower up on the 924S straight off the bat). But as to what horsepower gains are available from a 'chip', you'd have to check that out for yourself (unless someone here has done it?).

Of course, in the meantime, seems you've got a nice 924S to enjoy!

The front-of-engine service is up to date, right?

ya the timing belt was just changed befor i purchased the previous owner also added a turbo suspension. I'm only the third owner of the car so every thing is in good shape for being 20 years old drove it to California last month with no problem had an oil change new plugs and wires. it runs alot better i just have a rattle noise now when idling i think the oil guys loosened something up under there i will half to look and see.

the guy i bought my car from is a good friend of mines dad he also had one i think it was a 928 something like that it was a 8 cylinder i know that he said something about euro style any thought? i pulled up some info on it and seems like the 944 turbo is still a better deal. and i know he was talking about selling it for alot after he got it fixed up.

i guess im going to start saving up money when i half a good chunk ill sell my 924s and get me a 944 turbo i can not wait to get a manual again. thanks guys it is very nice to find a place where other people know about porsche cars. i know how to work on cars but im no engineer ill leave that to some of you guys im just an artist/ tattoo artist.
