you feelas say that a 5 cylinder audi should bolt up well with my 924 body and drivetrain, but will the 4 cylinder 4000s have the same capabilities or is it a totally different engine if yes how many horse power is this engine ?

I have NEVER seen a postive statment yet that ANY of the Audi engine will 'bolt up'. We are all guessing cause do far no one has actually seen one done! And I don't mean just seen one in a car but SEEN how it was done. After all, anything is possible; depending on the machine and foundry resources at your disposal!!

Good luck
John

Hi all,

I am conducting an investigation trying to find out whether the 5-cyl will actually fit. I have posted a message on rennlist 924/944 as well as on some other message boards. I'll see what happens.

As far as the 4 cylinder 4000 engine is concerned, I think it has about 80-90 hp. Hence, the 5-cyl is a better option from this point of view. Audi's model names, by the way, are quite different between the US and Europe. Here, I think what you call the '5000' is called the '100' and the '4000' is called the '80'.

Regards
Fredrik

Ditto.

Incidentally, and another guy brought this up with me, (1) how tall is the Audi engine anyhow?

I think one reason 924 heads get hot and blow gaskets is because the head is higher than water in the rad. (3) What if that engine is really tall?

Finally (3) where will you get tech advice and support, and who will service a 924 with an Audi 5 cyl engine? Only the very daring.

I seem to remember hearing that the audi 5000 unit wouldn't fit in a 924. Porsche wanted to put it in but couldn't that's why they put the 944 engine in and made the 924s. Could be wrong however.

I just read Mark's comment on the motor swap and I am sure that I read
that Audi discontinued the 100 motor and started making the 5-cyl. so
Porsche used up the existing stock of 100's while they decided what to do
They decided that the 5-cyl. would not fit so they designed the 944 motor
to fit in the engine compartment of the 924. ( POOF !! the birth of the 944
and the 924S) Brad
