Just disconnect the lines at the rack and let the fluid drain out, then disconnect the power steering pump (take the belt off). It will work in manual mode, but it will be really hard to turn the steering wheel while at a standstill (I know from experience).
I believe the tie rods are a little beefier on the manual racks to handle more stress, but I know a few people that run their 'S' with the PS disconnected.
They make replacement manual rack kits from the early 944 that fit - the full conversion kits are about $950. I have it on my "to do" list for this coming winter. I'm tired of ATF dripping all over the place.

About the Leaks - I think part of the problem is that the PO used a bunch of regular hose clamps that have grooves that dig into the hoses and cause some of the leaks. Tightened the hose clamps only works temporarily.
Do they still make the solid hose clamps that came from Porsche?

They do. . .I can tell you the company name tomorrow, as the things are all over my car and ungodly expensive. I'd love to find another supplier (other than PCNA). _________________ Toofah King Bad

Paid $120 for it, needed new tie rod ends @ $16 each. Just finished bolting up the rack yesterday, cant wait to take my leak free steering system for a test drive.
Point of advice when removing the PS rack: If you have allen head banjo bolts dont bother using an allen wrench to remove them, youll just strip them all. I would just go right for a pair of channel locks to remove the banjo bolt from the rack. |
