| ok guys here is the deal i used to have a 78 n/a loved it but due to fiscal responsibilites i had to sell her. well long story short i work for a porsche dealership and came across a 1982 turbo with 56 thousand mile on it. it has been sitting for 15 some odd years. the back story is the orginal owner was driving it crossing an intersection adn started to lose power he looked back saw a small puff of smoke from the tailpipe and the car died. his frined told him it was the turbo so he took it off and there it has sat. well the owner now bought it and it sat then for the 15 odd years. it is in a heated garage it does crank but will not start i have been told. here is the kicker he said he will sell it to me for $500! supposedly the interior is in excellent shape along with the exterior. i just want to know what i am getting into. i get mixed reviews from the guys at my shop. i do know how to work on cars. i have a 84 928s as well so let me know what you guys think thanks |

Most of us that have bought a turbo have spent thousands of dollars after the purchase.
Some of us have spent more than $10,000 after the purchase.
Most of the fuel injection system will most likely need to be replaced since the fuel has surely turned to goo.
The original problem sounds like a broken timing belt which means bent valves. Valves are becoming impossible to find.
The car is easily worth $500 in parts alone, but be prepared to spend several thousands of dollars to make it safe and road worthy.
Once you spend all that money, you will be hard pressed to get $2000 to $3000 if you try to sell it. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

C'mon he's already hooked like the rest of us, so I had to post the legal disclaimer to protect us. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

The camshaft and followers may be damaged beyond repair by the lack of oil for 15 years.
Every rubber part on the car will need to replaced (dozens of parts).
Don't crank it until the timing belt and tensioner are replaced. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Don't listen to them! I took a car that sat outside for 10 years in a junk yard through summer heat and winters snow, rain.etc. I had it running and RACING in 2 weeks. Just clean the fuel system out before you crank it over too much.
It's a steal for $500.00 _________________ 1976 924

Bring a compression tester and a few tools.
-And some oil in something that allows squirting it into the cylinders - not for dry-wet compression testing, but just to lube the cylinders before proceeding.
Of course pull the fp relay or the wire to the overboost switch (way easier) before comp. testing. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

I would give him $200, $300 max and part it out.
15 years is more than half of my life, that car is a door stop. |

If it's nice cosmetically, basically sound, it would be worth the effort - as long as you budget another $2k for repairs, and the valves aren't bent.
Sadly, these cars are much more complex and finicky than the NA's. Of course, that's why we love them so! _________________ Vaughan Scott

I bought a car that sat for 10 years under a cover for all that time and had no issues. The rubber was fine as was the 13year old gas. Cranked up and fire after I put on a new battery. Yes it need some work like tires, wheel alignment and a general cleaning.
For $500 we all would buy it if it was in the neighborhood. I sold one of our guys on this like my complete red plaid interior for $400 8 years ago. The hood alone is worth the money. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"
