Just when I thought the dashboard R&R I just did would hold the crown indefinately, I have a new winner.
ALL FOUR of my turbo mounting bolts were gone. I am 99% sure I tightened them during turbo install, but apparently not enough. I also should have used new hardware, I suppose.
So anyway, getting those four bastards in without disturbing any of the other turbo crap was AWESOME FUN, totally recommended! Replaced them with some 10.9 fasteners and new spring washers and got them nut bustingly tight with a couple of different wrenches.
So. . .check the torque on these things if you think of it. It was making a low grumbling and disconcerting rattle at around 3k. Glad it didn't turn out to be teh turbo, but I do hope my exhaust mani is OK. . .

Repeat as necessary: new hardware, piss-tight.
Deep offset box-end wrench worked very well on the uppers. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Ok, so let me get this straight.... you installed spring washers on turbo mounting bolts?.... do these bolts happen to get really hot? ....

They go into the block, so hopefully not a lot hotter than the coolant!
If you look at the PET, this is how they were delivered by Porsche. _________________ Toofah King Bad

Funny, this was about what I had pictured as the worst job before I opened the thread. When I got my first 931, the turbo wasn't completely bolted in properly - leaked oil everywhere and was loose and leaking (boost and exhaust too)! Eventually had to R+R completely.
I spent a long time, and many repeated attempts over the years, to find a system that would keep that bugger in place.
Final solution seems to be use copper locknuts where possible (mainly just the downpipe flange), and safety-wire all the rest of the bolts. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'd personally go with stainless steel locknuts on the high heat bits, and serrated stainless steel washers instead of spring washers. As outlined in the exhaust section of maximum boost. Apparently copper locknuts tend to go soft and saggy after awhile in turbocharger heat conditions

Yeah, when I initially did the R&R I used all new hardware from Porsche, and neither the exhaust components nor oiling system have leaked a drop. . . _________________ Toofah King Bad

While chasing an oil leak I found mine had come loose where the mounting bracket joins the turbo body. The bracket was still tight to the block. Those socket heads were tricky to get at without pulling the charge tube but I got them. Hopefully the o-ring between them didn't move! First issue since I installed the turbo a year and a half ago. _________________ 81 931 Minerva Blue
