|
|
Hi All
Almost got my 924 on to the road again. Just failed the MOT on a couple of things.
Windscreen washer jets not working
Emissions too high
The Jets a case of maybe flushing out system, as might be gunked up from standing a long time.
Emissions - any pointers for getting these down? _________________ Porsche 924 2.0 Litre (1982 model),

The little joints in the windshield washer also function as check valves, and often get crudded up with algae.
Good news is they should be real cheap and easy to replace, even if you have to go to the dealer. I just got a new pair for my 931. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Emissions too high ? - No problem, keep diagnostic-tip 0,5 meters away from exhaust-end..........When volume readings are ok press the button!!
Thats the way i /we (my friendly Bosch-Dienst) do it since years.Do not play arround with the mixture if you can avoid it,- if you need too, use a 3mm hex and turn slowly to the left, mixture is going to the lean site. Make sure engine is hot, before starting.Reset after emmision test.

Nadgers. You need a CO meter and timing light to set it properly.
How far out was it?
Any half decent garage should have the kit and be able to do it.
Check the spark timing first then tweak the fuel down until you get a pass. That's what I did!
An ignition tune up (Lead, dizzy cap and rotor arm) will also help.

I asked the garage to have a quick look, be a lot quicker. Just want it back on the road. _________________ Porsche 924 2.0 Litre (1982 model),

Get them to stick it on the gas analyser, put the lights on full beam (A bit of load) and then twiddle the mixture until it passes. Get a proper tune up when you can be bothered.
Bring it up to Preston and you can do it on my driveway _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

It depends what it failed on.
If it was CO (carbon monoxide), I think the limit is 4% which would mean your car is running quite rich. The spec is 1% - 2%, but they probably run best at around 2% - 2.5%, so don't let the garage set it too low...
On the other hand, it could be HC (hydrocarbons), which is less straightforward. It could mean the car's running too rich or too lean (but the CO reading will give a clue as to which), could be the timing's out or it could be an injector problem...
All of the above can be easily fixed, but make sure your garage has a mechanic who understands the Bosch CIS system. There are, unfortunately, precious few... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

2 things to do, make it pass an MOT THEN make it run like you want.
Get the green ticket first then read up on the CIS and tune it to run properly _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...

I got it through the MOT. TheMOT centre done the emmisons. It intially failed at 8% CO2. The HC's were fine.
It's goes a dream when warm, a nice drive. However one issue; cold starting a right pain in the butt.
Takes a couple of starts then idles not great at cold. Kinda have to wait until it warmed up to go on a drive. I looked on the FAQ's a few pointers there. The car had been sitting a while, so is the Aux cold valve prone to sticking on sat cars?

Warm-up regulator aka control pressure regulator, more likely... though yes, the aux air valve can certainly not function right... _________________ Vaughan Scott

Ok looked in the FAQ. Says might be CSV related?
It takes a couple of cranks for it to catch, then after about the 4th/5th crank it idles. Though if I go to apply any real gas in this cold idle period, it goes to stall. So have to just sit there and wait. _________________ Porsche 924 2.0 Litre (1982 model),

It's the WUR - for certain.
That's also why your CO was up at 8% (8%! ). The previous owner jacked up the mixture so that it starts OK which makes it far too rich once the engine's warmed up.
New WURs are getting hard to find and expensive. I think Golf GTi ones are still relatively available and are probably (don't know for sure) close enough to use in the 924.
There's a write-up on how to fix a dead WUR on some BMW site, but both Tiny and I had no luck in resurrecting our respective dead ones... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

I sold one last week on e-bay for about £20...
Evil bay is the way forward but get one off the same age car or chaeck the part number there are lots of very similar but fundamentally different versions.
Scrappies might be able to provide, dunno about the part numbers but they are on things like '24, mk 1/2 Golf GTis, some old volvos, mercs and so on. CIS was put in everything in the 80's
Check part numbers though, they are all bosch parts. _________________ 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 - Work in progress...
