We got the 924 for my wife -- she had a Chevy Cavalier given to her several years earlier, and we figured she should have a fun car.

She calls it her "rocket ship." Her younger sister came up with the name.

'Nuff said.

I agree! The 924 is a great car. Handles great, and the accel is..ok. But it is what you want it to be. It's an all around package deal that is hard to beat for the price of getting into one today. My 928S would smoke mustangs, and most of the imports all day long. Although, got into it with a Maserati one day, and got the shocking lesson that the 928 was not fast at all. Well into the triple digits, and then it pulled away like I was parked!!
Then there were the "I'm getting a ticket" moments. Pull out to pass, and triple the speed limit before realizing it. Not good!
That's where the 924 is great, it's a good fun car that can perform as a sports car when you want it to.
The wife thinks it's a blast compared to her GMC suv, and after driving the Rover around for a while, it's the same feeling for me.

You know it is funny. I grew up with my 924. Got it when I was 17. It had 69K hard miles on it but it was fun fun fun for me.

At the time I was quite inexperienced and it saved my butt many times. That is the brillance of this car. It is so well behaved and corners so great it saves your butt when you do some thing stupid.

That said I agree with some posts. Put it against some of the cars in its day and it performs more than adequate all while giving me up to 30 mpg if I was not flooring it all the time.

Couple things.
My car... not sure if this is typical. Stock set up I had back then. My car was very quick through an intersection. I mean there were very few cars that could stick with me. I could almost always beat people up to say 30mph. Then of course they would fly by in their 5.0L mustangs and camaros.

Also a decent comparison. My family had a 1985 Mazda 626 2 door coupe with a 3 speed auto. I loved that car. It handled great was quite quick and looked cool for a Mazda. Anyway one day my friend and I came around a sweeping bend and went for it... 626 against 924. I just walked away from him with no problem. Now as I recall it was a 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. Apples to Apples... though the Mazda was 3 years newer with about 1/3 the miles on it.

A car I would compare the 924 to is the Miata of the late 80s early 90s. That car handled great but was way underpowered if you ask me. But... that was what it was designed to be. A quick if not fast car with great ballance and perfect handleing manors.

That is what the 924 is. Not a monster engine car but mine is quick (faster now with my modifications) and can handle with the best of them.

One funny story.

This was back in 1987 when some new fangled 4 cyliner turbo from Porsche was prowling around. My friend was driving my 924 and we were playing with other cars on the highway (I know stupid but we were teens) and we were winning the battles. The we see some thing coming and from car and driver articles I recognise the lights. Hey looks like a 944 Turbo!

So I say hit it... and we all know at 80mph even dropping to 4th gear hitting it in a 924 does not throw you back in the seat. Anyway the 944 turbo was maybe 50 yards back and closed the gap in what seemed like 2 sec and flew past us. He did slow and give us a friendly nod. Sweet car! But not apples to apples there

Sorry I kind of went on and on here.
Eric

I had the two best 4 cyl sports cars from the era figured out already. LOL
Long live the miata and the 924.

You'll DEFINITELY lose. My stock 924 NA is SO SLOW...I honestly can't think of anything that compares...except maybe a 3-cyl Metro...or a Tractor...or MAYBE a Mercedes 200D 4-cyl diesel with a slipping transmission...what was Porsche thinking anyway? I have a Supra turbo that has basic modifications done to it, and while it's not lightning fast...it would absolutely decimate a 924, even a turbo.
Well, it was supposed to be a Volkswagon, & Volkswagons rule is, if its not a hot hatch, its not supposed to be fast.

Oh well, I don't even have my 924 anymore...I traded it for a Merc 300SEL. It's a boat, but it's way faster than the 924.

Hmm...I'd say that's debatable!! It has less body roll in the turns than the 924.

Less roll doesn't mean its faster. Probably due to less grip because of the weight. Your welcome to try keep up with me at any track If the merc brakes hasent burned up after just a few corners .

This thread is crap anyway, childish threads like this is one reason why so low down on my list of favorite forums.

How fare is it to compare to cars that are way newer. The cars that the 924 was competing with does barley even exist today, they are all rusted away. It´s a bit pointless to compare like you do, i´ve driven faster than lots of faster cars at the porsche club track days, 996,993s boxsters 951 and so on. there are so many factors that plays a role, its so hard to say that one car is faster or slower than another...(In my case a combination of pretty good driver and a nice set of tires made me keep a good pace at the track)

One way is to give them to The Stig, one at a time, to put around the TG track!
