I bought this car off another kid on the forums, and he said the alternator belt snapped and the car started to run hot, so he cut it off and had it towed home put a new belt on and it started right up. Im not rulling out a BHG but Ive been told different, Im going to do a compression test and a radiator pressure test to determine this... But,
its a 79 924 with the 2.0 Im sure it needs a water pump because after it runs for a few minutes it starts making a lower pitched whinning noise that is consistant with the turning over of the engine, and it begins to run hot. Im also sure it needs a fan, one never comes on... It also has a little oily residue in the radiator and smells of petrolium, (alittle gassy or oily smelling)... Well I called east coast imports out of Jacksonville, NC, and talked to the owner, whom I have come to know pretty well over the last couple of years because of the porsches I have owned. He said "he hasn't seen many head gaskets go bad in these cars, and that the culpret was most likely an oil cooler that was going bad." My questions are does it have one because in my research I cna't find a replacement? Where is it be located? and is it the same oil cooler I have in my 87 924s? or is It like the oil coolers typically found in old school vw's where it is simple and just has rubber hoses hooking to both ends? Any info on where to get things, like a rebuilt oil cooler or one rebuilt, or a fan motor would be helpful! I think I have the water pump coverd...

Doesn't have an oil cooler stock. Headgasket issues are somewhat common. Especially after overheating.

The mech probably had the 924S (or 924T) stuck in his brain - they both came with oil coolers. As Min mentioned, the 924NA didn't.
The squeely sound I'd attribute to a slipping belt. A bad water pump normally makes more of a clunking or knocking sound. Worn alternator bushings are common with the 924NA, and make it difficult to align and tension the belt properly. There are upgraded bushings available that are made of a tougher material. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

And I believe that in original condition, only one fan will turn on unless the A/C is engaged. _________________ 78 924 NA

Try bleeding the air out of the cooling system from the removable rubber cork on the upper coolant hose. The system will get air locked if over heated. _________________ 1976 924

Squeeling could be belt tensioners or a bearing in the alt as said earlier.
If the cam belt is too tight the tensioner squeels.
The fan problem could be a duff thermo switch on the rad, short it out and see if the fan kicks in.
If a/c is fitted one fan will run with ign on and the other relies on the thermo switch. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Actually, if factory AC equipped, when AC is switched off both fans should run at the same under control of the radiator-mounted thermo switch.
When AC is switched on, both fans run continuously and not under control of the thermo switch.
You only get one fan (the left side) after shutdown, controlled by the thermo switch and running at low speed through the resistor.
Mine work this way and the wiring diagrams confirm that that's how they should run..
With the engine off, reach up from below and spin the non-working fan - see if it's stuck. A common cause of failure is worn, gummed-up, or corroded bearing/s.
Might also be a wiring/connector problem, or just a blown fuse (,but possibly due to a stuck fan). Each fan is on a seperate fuse. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

IIRC, the water pump impeller can come loose from the shaft and cause overheating. It will look fine from the outside but no water will be circulating, or not much anyway. Replacing the water pump is pretty easy and fixes this.
As previously stated, your mech probably has your 1979 car mixed up with a 87-88 924S. The later cars have the 944 running gear and there is a history with those cars of failed oil cooler seals.
You might have other problems. You'll want to go through some basic diags to figure out what's going on -- engine compression + leakdown, exhaust gas in the coolant, pressure test coolant system, something more is going on.... |

I did a compression test last night and came up with 140 130 160 150... thats the order of cylinders too 1 3 4 2. These numbers aren't as consistant as I have seen but theyre good right? Found a waterpump to buy 15 bucks on the forums... One fan comes on hot wired one doesnt do any thing but spark. And does anyone know about the meistro? or miestro? signing an engine or tranny after he builds one? _________________ Fast, Reliable and Cheap... Now you can only choose 2. |

yea 15 for a rebuilt or low milage... I don't really care, also got another offer to sell me one for 25 bucks, I guess both fellas don't get one the net on the weekend though because I can't get a reply from either. Well I was thinking about changing the head gasket this month. I drained the radiator and filled it up again put some head gasket sealent in for shits and giggles, let all the air out of the system, drained it again after the temp gauge got half way, filled it up and bled the air and she doesn't run a lick over the white area now?? guess something worked...
