I like my 82 turbo so much that I started looking at 968's. Anyone know what sort of things to watch out for on them? I want a tiptronic only because it is going to be my business car and I see a lot of stop/go in the Oakland area. Are there any troublesome engine issues? _________________ 82 931 mostly new |

Hey Ron,
I have a 968 (about a 2 years now) with a Tip, I love this car almost as much as the 924 . problems with the 968s are
1. the timing\balance belts (replace them about 30k/3years or risk a $5k head rebuild)
2. water pump failures (not really bad but most everyone replaces it when they do the belt - just in case)
3. pinion bearings fail (very seldom happens to the Tips - it's a manual thing)
4. hall sensor and DME relay fails (this happens on 944 also)
5. variocam chain/pads do were out and break (this can cost you 2 new cams so it's a good idea to check them once a year - checking is very easy to do)
www.968forums.com is great for info and help (registration has been slow lately but be patient its worth it)
www.rsbarn.com is a great service center (it's in NJ), they truly love these cars and have spent alot of developmet time on them.
I hope this helps get you started, let my know if you have any other questions _________________ Rick

I heard the Tips aren't as good as the manuals, but that was from someone selling a manual... _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

They are a little slower off the line and top rated speed is like 2mph slower but if you drive in heavy traffic or have bad knees (sp?) it sure is nice.
This fall our PCA went on a tour and me and my car was able to keep up and stay in the top 5 (the other four were turbo sticks, 911 and such). Not bad for a N/A auto. (kinda felt bad for the gent in front of me as my hood badge loomed large in his rear view the whole drive )

I followed one home for about an hour yesterday... gorgeous car! He was probably wondering why a Subaru Outback was tailing him... and then pulling up along side, and then more tailing...

I think I will end up buying one before the summer. It is just too nice of a car not to share the garage with the 931. _________________ 82 931 mostly new |

There are folks that have made them, you need to use an 8v head from a 944 to lower compression. The UK folks even made a supercharger for it (big $$$ + you lose the A/C) _________________ Rick

OK, so there was never a factory turbo job. Thought not.
Thanks, Rick. _________________ 1985 Porsche 924 'Lux', Kalahari Beige (my ex)

Never say never...
In 1992, Porsche introduced the 968 Turbo RS racecar which it developed to compete in the new ADAC GT racing series in Germany. The car was based on the 968 coupe with limited lightening due to the regulations of the series which had a 4kg/bhp power/weight ratio limit.
The car featured a K27 turbo boosting the 3.0 litre, 4 cylinder engine and an 8V head, similar to the 944 Turbo S, rather than using the 16V 968 head.
refference..
