It drips oil when running, and it actually makes smoke while doing so. What are the most common things to leak oil around the exhaust manifold/oil filter? The filter is on tight and I'm pretty sure the leak was there before - there's a crust of gunk covering the exhaust pipe. _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Valve cover gasket, or filler cap gasket? _________________ Toofah King Bad

No, it's under the manifold, I saw fresh oil around the oil filter. There's some hose that runs next to the oil filter, could that be the case? _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

| There's an oil passage that runs between the head and the block right above the oil filter mount. It is often the cause of alleged oil filter leaks but it is really a head gasket that has failed in this area. Be sure to check *carefully* where the oil is coming from and if it is above the filter mount and below the manifold, be sure to carefully check the seam between the head and block. |

Ohh crap you just made my day
I'll check it on the weekend. If that thing needs a head gasket, I might as well mothball it till spring. _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Excuse my ignorance on the workings of 931's but isn't there an oil filter adapter and some oil cooler lines in that same area of concern?

| I've had people replace the filter and not tighten it properly - believe it or not. |

Another possibility: There's an "O-ring" between the oil filter mounting plate and the block that "flattens" out over time and begins to leak. Replace the "O-ring". Don't know that it would necessarily cause smoking though.
Could also be the "O-ring" in the turbo oil feed line. That is a very special high temperature "O-ring" that is made of viton (I think that's the name of it). Anyway, it's green colored and still available from Porsche for approx. $4. It usually gets incorrectly replaced by an "O-ring" of standard composition and therefore doesn't last very long. A leak there could cause smoking as the oil would tend to leak on the hot turbine and exhaust pipe. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

or have the filter gasket from the old filter come off and stick to the mounting. No need to ask me how I know. It wasnt on my 924 and it was many years ago but it was one of those things that wont happen again.

Thank you all for the replies! I'll check those points. Hopefully it's me being dumb and leaving the filter loose or something trivial like that. _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |

Turbo oil supply would be my first port of call. I had a hairline crack in mine so the car would smoke badly on hard left turns only. _________________ 1979 931 with a 350 chev

I'm a dumbass.
Rasta was right the first time, a flashlight to the back of the head revealed a squished, cracked gasket and the oil equivalent of Niagra Falls. Oil then leaked down and around all the stuff, making it look like the whole car leaks under the exhaust manifold.
Of course, that doesn't mean that my other stuff doesn't leak, but at least I should stop smoking like a locomotive.
Wanted to fix it yesterday, but, alas, auto stores are closed on christmas _________________ 1982 924 Turbo, now Lemon |
