"...today, when I started the motor, it started blowing out thick white smoke with a funny odor from the exhaust. There was so much smoke that it filled up my garage and my whole back yard as well as my neighbor's backyard."
That white smoke thing IS impressive huh? First off, Stop. Don't start it again. You may have either blown a head gasket or a head - and if I am wrong on either of these points, know that the white smoke just has to be coolant. Sickly sweet smell right? I think the engine is 'burning' coolant.
Second, get it to someone who can look at it and fix it but don't drive it. Once there, and the guy is diagnosing it, my suggestion would be to price out a copper head gasket from Paeco, or, just price out a head gasket from the dealer. Then you have something to compare to when the mechanic gives you the price of the new head gasket.
Third, go over the car for cause. Why did the head gasket blow. Heat. But why? Did the coolant pump fail? I blew a head gasket that way. Is there a blockage in your piping? Check the flange at the firewall between the heater core and the engine. Mine clogged there with crap and blew my gasket there too. How else have I blown a head gasket? Oh yeah, my thermo fan switch failed (cost was like under $20 CDN) and my thermostat failed (Cost was negligible).
good luck.
Rick
