Any suggestions for Crappy car modification laws?

here is a snippet from the Queensland modification laws. i think these laws( code of practice) were written by a group of our finest socially challenged engineers who use to get bullied at school, drive around in old shi7 mobiles and never had a girlfriend.

"The fitting of spacers or adaptors between wheels and
hubs, additional to those provided by the vehicle
manufacturer, is not permitted"
"The maximum tyre width for a car or car derivative must
not be more than 1.3 times the vehicle manufacturer’s
widest optional tyre"

so my problem is how do i get approval for alternate 4 stud rims, considering it is hard enough to find a 108 PCD and impossible to find the 22mm offset, apart from those found on the stock rims. ie I NEED SPACERS FOR MY 17 INCH BEASTS! BUT THE LAW SAYS NO! moving out of Queensland isnt an option

also does anybody know if the 924 turbo had a different suspension system to the 924 and whether the turbo ever came out with drums in the rear? Im putting on a turbo but will need to prove that i dont need to change my whole brake/suspension setup...

Just buy the correct spacers and find an example of the same size spacers that are available directly from Porsche.

I don't really know the laws, but if you are getting the car inspected, just leave the stock wheels on, and swap them out afterward.

I doubt the cops would pull you over based on the rims you have?!

i was thinking of doing this, im not concerned about the police but more so about the insurance inspectors who look for anything to make your insurance void escpecially when you run up the arse of the expensive slow bentley driver infront of you. "touch wood" I could just drive a little safer but my 924 wouldnt like it!

does anybody know what spacers are available from porsche for the 4 stud. Here you need a nice suit and combed hair to talk to the porsche people even then they scoff at the fact that you dont have a modern porsche..besides i dont own a comb...let alone a suit lol

I'm sure the QLD laws have stuff about decibel rating for vehicle exhaust etc too... how many Harley's do you see on the street that are so loud you can't think straight... maybe you just need to find the right inspection agent...

slow down....I think your porsche would like getting its front end balled up even less

not to mention what your wallet would think about having to pay for balling up the back end of one of those bentleys you mentioned...without going into too much detail, I imagine it would feel much like a Porsche slamming into your rear end

The turbo always had 5 bolt discs all round.

79' and 80' turbo's definitely had four bolt for the base model, five bolt was an option. the only question is whether or not any four bolts models were sold new in your country, and if that makes a difference or not. any original 924 turbo literature from the factory (sales brochures, ect) should clearly show the five bolt as an option to prove it. im sure i have some factory booklets around someplace, but they were us market books , youd probably have to find one that made for your market for it to be considered as "evidence."

As 924guy said, the early US turbos had the 4 bolt but the ROW got the 5 bolt. Australia only got the 5 bolt as sold from the dealer. It will take some reading and research of both the ADRs, QLD legislation and the insurance policy fine print for a definite answer and you will likely find some conflict. Do what layers and politicians do and find the loopholes. Are imported vehicles, any Porsche optional or manufactured parts applicable, and US specs included one way or another.

QLD doesnt have annual inspections, do they? Although insurance assessors are not fools they would rarely see any boxters let alone a 924. Most likely they have never inspected one and even if they had would hardly remember the details. Most people know bugger all about the cars and being a Porsche expect them to be lower, louder or have fatter wheels. Its not like a commodore or camry where any modification is easily picked.

Besides that, If you are thinking of fitting a turbo it is sensible to upgrade the brakes accordingly and go 5 stud anyway. Statistically you are going to wind it up at the same time the old fart in the bently changes lanes and you ARE going to run up his arse. And no one ever thinks it will happen to them, do they?

You wouldnt happen to be able to scan me some of those documents 924GUY ?? its definately a start.

I would love the 5 stud but so far ive blown my budget,(as we all do) and cant really afford it just yet. I just need that little MOD plate from the QLD inspectors saying my turbo is approved.. i think the fact that the early US turbos came with 4 stud means that the drum disk setup will be able to handle the less than 180 HP, i hope thats enough to satisfy the Mod inspectors. RC do you know where i can get the ADRs?

im worried more about not being insured for the bentleys arse then buying a new 924...besides here if i run into a bentley and am covered i only need to pay the $500 excess charge then the rest is up to the insurance guys

If it's important to you then spend a couple of dollars and get a state-registered automotive engineer to review your mods and give an opinion.

There's always a way and that way usually involves an automotive engineer certifying the mods.

Remember also that the 944 and 968 are derivatives of the 924.
