Hi, I'm getting close to my 1981 924 being back on the road interested if any one can recommend some tyres for me. It has standard rims and I would like to maintain an original look.

+1

Standard factory fit was 185/70/14

(A bit of a tall profile in my view, but someone at Porsche presumably knew what he was doing...)

I would go 195/60 R14, looks much better and retains stock profile height.

By brand? If you like to DRIVE 924, choose Yokohama AVS Sport or similar.

got me worried now, so 195/60 won't give standard ride height/diameter? I've only ordered them - maybe I will need to see one on..

No... you'd want a 65 profile to retain the stock o.d.

A 195/65 will give the same ride height/diameter as a 185/70 (within a few mm), if that's your main concern.

On the other hand, if you go for a 195/60:
the car will sit 1/2" lower
the wheel arch gap above the tyre will increase by 1/2"
your gearing will be about 5% shorter (which will give 5% better acceleration)
your speedo will read 5% high (assumming it reads correctly now! )
your odometer will start to read 5% quicker (i.e. notch up another 100 kms after only 95)
your cornering grip may be slightly improved (due to lower C of G)
your fuel comsumption will go up a bit (i.e. you will lose ecconomy)
your top speed will be reduced (by 6 - 7 mph, ~10 kms/hr)

The choice is yours...

I think 195/65 was the standard size here in Oz. Problem now is it's a bit hard to find quality tyres in that size.

Well, I took the 195/65 option, Yokohama.

the look very "right" the speedo is just as inaccurate as it ever was (GPS checked), the gearing is perhaps a little bit shorter. But the tyres have transformed the car.

Thanks for the advice.
