Since replacing my camshaft, I now have a quite nasty noise from one of the tappets. I'd like not to have to go through the rigmarole of matching tappets to adjusters again (which seems in one case to have failed first time around ). What I'd like to do is to identify the noisy tappet and concentrate on that one.

So my question: Is it possible/sensible to run the engine without the cam cover on? (I thought I could check the operation of the cam lobe oiler while I'm there.)

Secondly: Is there a simple means of identifying the noisy tappet?

i dont think that you can run the engine without that cover..oil will be allover the place.

You can get a STETOSCOPE..the one that doctors use to listen to your heart and lungs and instad of the big round thing you can fit a round bar of steel.

Using this tool you can identify where does the noise come from.

good luck !

I would use a feeler gauge. It has to be coming from one that has a bit too much slack.

^^^^^^what he said...

a piece of garden hose will work as a stethoscope, ear on one end, other end over the cam cover, look for the change in pitch..

maybe take off the cam cover, takeout sparkplugs and turn motor manually ? (Use of Stetoscope and hose maybe useful).

Don't be a baby, run it with the cover off... Be sure to have a camera handy for our entertainment though...

Stethoscope all the way, a piece of garden hose or pvc will amaze you with its ability to pinpoint noises.

Ha! I took the cover off to check the oil was getting up there. Suffice to say it was and yes it was very messy! Wouldn't want your ear anywhere near there.

Yes, you can run without the cam cover. I've done it and it's not as messy as you would think. Just lay a rag along the fender and you'll be fine. A great way to inspect cam, lifter and oiling tube operation.

What ? Driving w/O cam-cover ?!

i once forgott to put the cover lid back on and were driving arround the block. The whole engine compartment was a mess and i guess a lost a pint of oil in that short time.

If you dont have the same problem with your car, check the oil pressure and check if any engine oil is in youre engine !!??

Thanks for the replies, Guys (...and JAF).

Not driving, Nobbi, just with the engine at idle speed, to take a look.

Thanks, Tigger: I'll give it a go!

Porchev and 924Guy: I set the clearances (with a feeler guage) a few months ago. I think I did it right, but I could have cocked up. And, for sure, I'll check with a feeler gauge again when I take the cover off, before starting her up!

Morghen, I have a stethoscope, such as you describe especially for motors. I used it on an earlier car and got such a fright from all the noises going on, I haven't dared use it again!

Be interesting to know how you get on Mike. I got oil all over the inside of the bonnet, the engine generally and on the exhaust manifold (eek) and the wing. Didn't half make me jump, but forewarned and all that!

Interesting, JAF. What revs were you running? Surely not just idle speed...?

Could you tell where the majority of the oil was coming from? Was it being flung off from the cam lobes?

We used to run cars all the time with no covers on them to adjust the lifters you can cut an old cover in half and bolt it on or easier yet take a piece of carbord about a foot high and place it in the bottom of the head,it will act as a dam and the oil will fling against it. stiil makes a bit of a mess but it keeps most of it off the exshast pipe and your fender or wing as you call it

Sorry Mike I've not much idea. I started her up reaching through the window as I remember (before I discovered the internet so it's a few years ago). Will have been just idle speed. By the time I got round to the front (10 secs) there was oil all over the place so I didn't stick around to look where it was coming from. Reckon it might have been bouncing off the cam lobes as it was coming out at all sorts of angles.

Are you going to give it a try? With cardboard and rag maybe like DOCO and Tigger suggest.

Ugh, this is giving me flashbacks from my 1900 Opel. . .before I tossed the hydraulic lifters, the lash had to be adjusted with the engine running.
