Need clean and stock 924T 79-82 and 944T 86-89 for magazine article. These don't have to be garage queens but that would of course be a plus. Need to be driver vehicles, NO project cars, unless complete.
Someone who owns and drives both would be nice.
Need to be near this region or willing to drive to this region:
San Diego, Palm Springs, and the Central Coast of California (ie San Luis Obispo).
"Right now we're looking for a stock 924 Turbo to compare against a super-clean two-owner '83 280ZX Turbo 5-speed we found. The story would run six color pages, and would include a driving impression of each car.
In case anyone gets scared by the notion of me driving their car, a) the owner is in the passenger's seat at all times, and b) a driving impression is not like Car and Driver-style fifth-wheel instrumented testing: it's seat of the pants stuff, more touchy feely than hard numbers.
I also respect the notion that these are now 25 year old cars, belonging to enthusiast-owners (rather than car companies) and so beating on them isn't in the cards. That said, I do want to get a true sense of acceleration, braking and handling, so we're not going to just around an empty parking lot and call it done. Also, this isn't a "winners" and "losers" kind of
comparison: it's more of a "here are two approaches to the same market"
approach.

Dear Jeff,
I am sure you will find a suitable 924 Turbo for your test and look forward to reading all about it. You mentioned the cars would not be "beat" on, and we appreciate the thought, but you will not get the true sense of driving a 924 turbo without flogging it well. Please drive it like you stole it. You may also want to consider renting a hot tub and two so cal girls (or guys) for the 931 owner to distract them while you give their 931 the true test. Believe me, the car owner will not want to be in the car if you test it as it should be tested, they are far better off being entertained elsewhere.
Please make sure the test area has plenty of curves.
Thank you for your time,
a concerned 931 owner. _________________ Eric

I was working on my friend's 81 931 this past weekend, and I got to thinking that his car would be a perfect candidate for somone looking to road test an original example.
He is the original owner, having bought it from the Porsche Dealer in Pasadena, CA around June of 1981. The car only has 13K original miles on it. Original paint, never crashed, unmodified, with the original uncracked dashboard. Original turbo was replaced (less than 10K miles) when it failed while the car was under the two year warrenty from Porsche
The only addition to the car was a Clifford 1 alarm system which died over ten years ago, locking the hood closed so the engine could not be serviced, and the battery could not be replaced.
The car has been garaged, and not been registered since 1993. The paint is in beautiful condition, needing only a goos wax job, and the interior still smells new.
This past weekend, we finally got the hood opened without damaging the car by reaching in from the grille opening, and sawing off the bolts that held the malfunctioning hood lock assembly to the hood latch.
The battery was an ugly mess, but luckily only the negative battery battery was ruined. No damage to the battery tray or the positive battery cable.
Before we start it, I am planning on removing the spark plugs, dumping some motor oil in the cylinders, removing the valve cover and pouring more oil over the camshaft, replacing the oil delivery tube elbow, changing the motor oil, replacing the brake fluid, and replacing the timing belt. The clutch is not functioning correctly, so I am going to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders as well.
My friend never beat or flogged the car, and I know he is never going to loan it out to someone someone to let them get their jollies in the name of magazine journalism.
It's real easy to tell someone to beat on someone else's car. If your car was in perfect condition, I am sure that you would appreciate it someone told someone else to go ahead and beat on your car. |

Did anything ever come of this? My "941" is pretty much stock SII 931, but cosmetically probably wouldn't pass muster due to the 944 fenders... _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Sadly, though my car is in very good mechanical shape, it would never pass muster cosmetically - looks absolutely atrocious these days - and SoCal is just WAY too far from Detroit. Now, if one of those major Ann Arbor based car magazines were asking, it'd be another story... _________________ Vaughan Scott

I hope this man finds a suitable 924 Turbo for the write up. I'm going out to California soon and I'd be happy to take someone out in my car. My deal would be: If I find it breaks within a week after you've driven it, you fix it. The magazine probably wouldn't go for that. It's ok though. I don't need 15 minutes of fame for my car.
I hope Gohim's ride worked out - someone from this board should really get a 924 Turbo out into the public eye - it might help resale value - the more visible it is, the better for us. _________________ 1980 924 turbo, MSD, Meth. Inj, otherwise stock. |
