I have an '87 924S. I was driving home last night and noticed that my temperature gauge was reading a bit high. Unfortunately, I was stopped by a train and the temp needle made it just into the orange zone. After the train passed I was able to nurse it back home with the gauge reading between the last white dash and the orange area. I got home and noticed that the upper radiator hose had split and was leaking a steady little stream of coolant. Further investigated revealed that the radiator is loose at the top. Apparently, it flopped backwards and the pulley that lives right behind it rubbed through the upper rad hose.

The drive home was about 20 minutes with the ambient temperature in the low 60s F and speeds around 45mph, at most. Other than the obvious new hoses, coolant, bleed, and "floppy" rad fix, do I need to be concerned that more extensive damage may have occurred?

TIA

Ed

Am I missing a bracket that should mount on those three studs inside the green circle and keep the hose in place?

Errr...what is holding up your air box/filter holder?

Did you sort out the missing bracket - or has your car got a modified air intake and is no longer using the big plastic air box?

One thing to check. When refitting a rad and putting the top rubber blocks in place on either side (the ones under the pressed steel bracket held by the 13mm nut within your green circle) it IS possible to not have the rad fully forward and so the square section of this rubber does not engage properly in the socket on the rad. Result is a rad that floats back and forth on the hoses.

I am in the process of sorting it out. I am running the stock air filter and air box. As you mentioned muddy924, I don't think the radiator is installed correctly and so it is "floating on the hoses." I ordered a bracket from a salvage yard but it is the wrong one. Additionally, the front mounting holes on my airbox are so badly rusted (one bolt broke off in the mounting hole) that if I reuse it, the bolts will quickly rust and fuse together again.

Anyhow, I am still looking for the bracket that supports the front of the airbox and, perhaps, a new air box base.

I finally got the necessary brackets and have replaced the upper radiator hose. I have driven it around town some and it is running fine. However, I noticed when sitting, say at a read light, the temp gauge gets to the last white mark before the fans kick on. Once on, they cool the temp right on down (gauge drops to between the 2nd and 3rd white mark, I believe).

It this typical or should it not read this hot before the fans kick on? I never really paid that much attention to when the fans kicked on before that rad. hose split.

TIA

Ed
