I have an 924 2.0 from 1980 with standard suspension and brakes wich I use for trackdays.
I want a stiffer rear suspension, I already have Koni Yellow shocks and a 18 mm sway bar.
Will 944 Turbo torsion bars be a good upgrade.
And even more important will they fit without any modification ? _________________ 937 trackday car

They will definitely swap right in; the question would be how much stiffer are they, and will they be stiff enough to be worth all the trouble? I'm guessing no to the second question (having already swapped t-bars a few times). _________________ Vaughan Scott

As Vaughan said; it's not will they work but will they be worth the trouble. A subjective decision only you can make. While it's true that for VS and I the answer to the second is 'no'; our goals and preference are at the race extreme.
Since you did not say 'race' but rather 'track' then presumably you want to still drive on the street. With that in mind then assuming 'real' race parts would not be suitable for you then, yes, the turbo parts probably are just what you want. Combined with front springs of around 250 lb/inch they should be just what the Doctor ordered. (Give or take 50 lb to suite your style). There are some 220 lb front springs floating around that are just about perfect to such a setup. _________________ John

Yeah, seems hardly worth the trouble. OK, if you currently have the stock (base) 19mm bars, that would nearly triple the effective spring rate; on the other hand, if you already have the sport torsion bars, they're 23.5mm, and it is only an increase of 20%!

968 torison bars are 25.5, there are a lot circulating the market, at least here. Lots of the 968īs fully coil over.. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I agree with you completely so far as our requirements are concerned; but only Dutch 924 Racer can know if it's worth while for himself. And it's very easy to get a car too tight for decent street use.
My son and I had a couple of street 944s and one of them we upgraded something, maybe it was just shocks. But I remember LJ commenting to me afterwards that it really wasn't so nice to drive around as it had been because we had made the ride a bit harsh. But then he and I have the benefit of doing all the actual track time we want. So we tend to want our street cars comfy. (I don't even like a stick shift). Many of the cars I instruct at FATT (Friday At The Track) would be uncomfortable to my taste on the street. Rode with a friend in his GT3 from N Va. to Annapolis. Nice car. Too harsh.
Just to be clear: I wouldn't take the time and effort and money to put turbo bars in either. But I can see where that would make a very nice street 924 just about right. So if I wanted a really nice street 924, maybe I WOULD take the time and effort ...  _________________ John

They're one of the biggest factors in ride quality, yet are usually completely overlooked in discussions of track-car suspensions.
Based on my experiences with all these upgrades, I lean towards recommending you tend towards the stiffer options for springs and torsion bars on any car that sees a lot of track use (more than maybe twice a year), get good shocks, and if you don't like the ride on the street, use a softer street tire on the street, not your track tires!
I have two friends locally now - one with a 944S2, one a Pontiac Trans-Am - who've put full-track suspensions in their cars. The S2 is FINE on the street - and we're talking Detroit roads here, the worst in the nation! The Pontiac rides even better than stock, and it's got not only 2-4 times as much spring and custom-valved Bilsteins (the S2's on race Koni's), but a lot of plastic (delrin, poly-graphite, etc) bushings in place of the stock rubber bushings. _________________ Vaughan Scott

heavy duty shocks and a 25.5 front bar and adj rear is what I have. I like the setup. As they said above it is for a track car/street and not full race. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Even for a track day car the 25.5 bars are very soft. But its the cheapest and simplest way to get the spring rates up a bit on the rearend. The main reson that a car gets uncomfy is higher damper rates. Stiff dampers can get any car uncomfy. Stiff springs doesnt do that much to the struttines unless it get really stiff. So to get past this "problem" is to either have adjustable dampers or as already stated, som higher profile normal street tires (much softer sidewalls) for street driving. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo
