Need advice on a noisy drive tube on a 1982 924.

Got a new house and needed to get my garaged
924 going after left unstarted for 10 years.
My mechanic needed to unclog the injectors,
replace the master cylinder due to clogged
lines, replace both fuel pumps, etc ... and
the clutch/throw-out bearing.

Still, after all this, it seems the drive tube
bearings are REALLY noisy when the clutch is
disengaged. I'm told a new part will cost ~ $1000.
Is there an alternative ... such as rebuilt ...
that can be used to drop down the cost ? Can I
trust used parts for an 18 year old car ? Would a used 924S or 944 tube work ?

Any advice would be appreciated,
Randy C.

Rebuilds around $300. Several sources advertise in Pano. It appears not impossible to rebuild yourself.

The 924S, 924 Turbo, and 944 tubes all use a larger shaft and will not go on your car without several other swaps or mods that are non-trivial.

the noise that your are discribing is not the torque tube but the mainshaft beaing in the transmission which will only make noise when the clutch is not engaged because there is no load on the bearing. This can be replaced after removining trans and pulling back cover. i would find a porsche mechanic who understand this.

Thanks.

What was described to me was a drive shaft with
four pressed on bearings. My mechanic was
somewhat at a loss to how these are rebuilt,
visualizing a huge press to get the bearings
on and off. Is this even close to reality ?
If so ... I would not expect being able to
rebuild it myself.

You did recommend a group that can do a rebuild,
but wasn't familiar with them. Can you give me
some more info on contacting them ?

Thanks,
rc

Thanks, Wayne. The group I am using seems
pretty sharp, but they still may not be as up
on the 924. I definitely talk this over with
them.

Thanks again, John.

Will check with Porsche Panorama on a rebuild
"exchange".

Thanks again, Wayne.

I discussed this over with the mech. He agrees
the main bearing is a potential ... and we
agree upon an approach to isolate the noise.
He plans on removing the coupler from the
torque tube to the transmission and idling the
car. If the noise is still there ... off we go
to rebuilding the tube. If not, we do the main
bearing.

If this disconnecting the coupler doesn't pan
out, the only alternative is to use sound ...
but he feels the hollow tube may broadcast sound
too well to isolate this way.

okay here we go! the torque tube will be most noisy at speed under torque load, the main inout shaft bearing is most noisy when there is no load, if you step on the clutch and the noise disappears then it is the main shaft bearing in the gearbox. if you drive the car and there is a rumbling type vibration then it is the torque tube.

I have a torgue tube that I removed when I changed the 4 speed to a 5 speed. It is available if you need it. It is from a 77.5. Let me know.

Wished I would have known this last Christmas. It is exactaly what happened to my tranny. I ended up buying one from Dave Franks and installing it, no more noise when clutch is pushed in.
