I had recently changed my shift lever bushings on my '79 na and in spite of the trouble I had getting to them - dismantling and putting it back together seemed to go fairly smooth. On my first test run, while thoroughly enjoying shifting and having the gear shift stay in position, I noticed a vibration that starts at about 1400 and stops at about 1800 rpm. First I noticed that my new exhaust set up was off line, so I adjusted that and the vibration was still there. It occurs in neutral or in gear, with the clutch in or out. I don't know if this vibration was there before I fixed the bushings because there were no bushings left when I got in there. So this may have been there all along and just showed up now because things are actually firmly connected. It does not seem to affect anything now when I am driving, but I want to be sure this isn't something major that will blow up in my face later when I am far from home base.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

I think it could be engine mounts or driveshaft bearings! Or, something else entirely. . .



I think there is a procedure in our Tech Section or in Haynes that allows you to measure the mount with a home-made caliper to see if it has collapsed. That would be a worthy first step.

It feels like something from the front just the way the vibration comes on, that's why I thought maybe after getting everything moved around and then hooked back up maybe a mount that was already bad showed up - - ?
any ideas on a decent source for these mounts? I looked at performance products but I didn't know if any of you knew of a better possibly more reasonable option?

yes the exhaust was done just before all of this, then taken down to do this
I am not too familiar with the clutch and forward drivetrain wise - what should I look for, or at?
I know when I was working on the shift lever I moved the trans around while it was connected - but I didn't force it too much in any direction, just as much as it would move easily.

AFAIK, my shifter bushings are all still good, my shifter feels very notchy, and always stays in place when in gear. I also noticed that my shifter vibrates quite a bit right around 3500RPMs...above and below that it doesn't really vibrate at all...I just assumed it was normal?

I'm sorry I'm still learning some of these abbreviations - what is AFAIK?

my vibration occurs at a lower rpm consistently 14-1800. I thought I read in a post that the engine damper(?) might also be a culprit - I remember mine not looking too good when I was under there in the spring so I may check that too.
