I am replacing the clutch in my 1980 931. I have removed the clutch bellhousing and came across this.

Here is a link of the photo does not appear

http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/gweinheimer/detail?.dir=804e&.dnm=9e35re2.jpg&.src=ph

I does not look like the picture in the manual or the PET and has no visible clutch/pressure plate assembly. Any suggestions on what to do next to get at the clutch? Do I remove the starter ring? DO I need a special tool or do I need an allen key strong enough? I have already bent 2 allen keys on the nuts.

Thanks for any advise.

Use a quality allen bit on those bolts and make sure it's seated completely - they can and will strip, then you're in for a world of hurt drilling them out with the engine installed.

You'll need a 3/8" drive bit and a matching 3/8" torque wrench to torque them down correctly when you reinstall anyway.

Be forewarned - the pressure is fairly heavy and will fall right on your chest when the last allen bolt comes out, along with the clutch disk.

Yeah as you catch the pressure plate with both hands, the clutch disc will fall out and damage itself. Don't ask.

If you have a clutch alignment tool, install it to hold the clutch before removing those bolts.

the pics your looking at in the book are probably a for an n/a 924, mine looks the same as yours.... im going to underline nicks post.. echo it, scream it .. go out and get the proper tool. its going to look similiar to this:

even with one, its still easy to strip them out, i stripped one bolt, then broke off a "bolt remover" inside the old bolt carcass, and im still trying to get the darn thing out, two new cobalt bits toasted so far, and several old ones burnt up. one bad bolt...

Too late. The last bolt stripped. I have started to drill it out. The first part was easy, like the metal was soft but am now into some very hard metal. I picked up a bolt remover. I am hoping for the best but have also picked up some expensive drill bits to kep up the drilling.

I did mine 7-8 years ago and I have lost a few brains cells since then but I somewhat recall stripping one of the heads. I used a bit and drilled just far enough for the head of the bolt to pop off. Left the threads and removed with vice grips after pulling clutch pack back. If you are hitting something hard now, sounds like the ring gear. Has the head seperated from the bolt yet?

Thats pretty much my plan... drill out the head, take off then starter ring, then remove the remaining stud.

and no, the head has not yet seperated from the bolt. I needed to take a day off with the family.

Porsche must design their cars to maximize the hours they can charge for repairs. This is way too much work just to replace a clutch.

I got the nut out and the clutch off so thanks to everyone who gave advice.

The next question is about the release bearing guide tube. The new one I purchased is about .4 cm smaller outer size than the old one. Is this okay? Or will this cause a problem for the release bearing? The drive shaft splines still fit through the tube fine.

Thanks

Does the throw out bearing still fit over the guide tube?
