Well with my first self done front of the engine service nearing completion I am ready to move on with
some other tasks while waiting for the replacement water pump to arrive.
first challenge at hand is removing the distribution rotor. It looks like it hasn't been done for some time
and was once attempted to be removed with out success. I have the triangle type with the brass allen
wrench type screw. I have tried an allen wrench but it is not going to budge with something that small. I am
going to have to track down something to fit a socket wrench.
my other challenge is replacing the cracked headers with the cast iorn ones that just came in. I know I can
get the old ones loose from the engine but how do you get them off the joining pipe? There isn't much
room for a big wrench and those suckers aren't going to easily broken free. Do you have to lower the whole

In my case I had to go w/a 3mm 3/8 drive allen socket w/ pressure to break it free. It may be under the influence of Loctite.
I also had to snap the bolts at the base of the headers off to remove the cat section. It was EZ though as mine were pretty rusty. IIRC I did use some heat/Blaster. _________________ Dal Glassinger |

the screw for the rotor does have red loctite holding it in as they come this way from the factory, and to get the headers off you have to drop the section from the headers to the cat out first. _________________ 3 928s, |

| The rotor is essentially glued on sometimes. Once I was sure I had a proper replacement in hand I CAREFULLY used a small cold chisel and gentle but sharp raps (prefered direction= near parallel with the shaft) with a hammer and broke the old one off; it was the only way. Just be sure not to damage the set screw or the shaft and pack shop rags around to keep the bits of old rotor from getting into the wrong places. The bakelite/plastic is brittle enough to brake off without damaging the rest of the components. I hemmed and hawed before going to the chisel but having done it it is the fastest and easiest way. I would avoid the strongest loctite on reassemble; it seems like overkill. I haven't used any thread sealant and after twenty+ thousand miles the set/lock screw is still tight. I don't know why they glue it in. Good luck. |

Double nut the exhaust studs and back out the entire studs, pull the head and the exhaust drops. Replace the studs new with SS ones and new copper nuts. _________________ Dal Glassinger |
