Are oil pumps a part that are prone to defect in the 2.0 liter Porsche motor? I think it may be a wiring glitch, but I'm not sure... my car has had a fresh oil change and filter, is filled to max, and I'm getting a lot of blinking out of my oil pressure light while at rpms below 3000 (most of the time). The oil pressure gauge is also being really jumpy.

Input is appreciated.

Check grounds, battery to body, motor to body, and ground cluster under dash.

Is this the soaking wet car?

^+1 + check connection to oil pressure sender at the back of the cylinder head.

BTW, Will, you've just lost your geek credentials by spelling 'erratic' wrong!

Usually wiring or bad grounds.

The oil pumps seem to be pretty robust. Some have had to deal with the built-in pressure relief valve, but the pumps themselves are very good (usually ).
With the light blinking, I'd suspect maybe some of the foil insulation on the firewall is to close to the sender at the back of the cyl head.

Sounds like rod bearings... But make all the checks these guys have suggested first. Can you plumb in an oil pressure gauge apart from the one in-dash?

I'd fully expect it's electrical.

Probably electrical, but it's a 5 minute job to remove and clean the pressure relief valve, so go for it.

What is your pressure doing at said 3000 RPM avraging the jumps?
Does it "blink" the same both cold and hot?

Please post removal procedures for pressure relief valve.

It's held in place by the large cover (looks like a large nut) on the end of the oil pump. Its to the left (when standing over the open engine bay) and sligthly lower than the center of the front pulley.

Just unscrew it and the spring and piston will fall out (catch it). Clean the parts and the bore and put it back together.

RIP 1978 Porsche 924
Cause of death: #3 cylinder connecting rod bearing

Engine gave no sign of death aside from a blinking oil light and erratic oil pressure. The car croaked on the side of the road in Bentonville, Arkansas on my way back to the office from lunch. She started missing all of a sudden, and a block later, she coasted klutzily into a ditch where she shuddered, sputtered, and died. We pulled it back to the house, it wouldn't start with the starter, but we did get it to crank and remain running from pull starting it, dead miss on #3, engine eventually siezed, and is being taken out to be re-built or to be transplanted with a Toyota 22RE-T. I haven't decided which will be more difficult: Rebuilding a porsche engine, or transplanting the porsche wiring and engine with that from an 89 Toyota Pickup Truck..... eek. I hate restoring cars on a budget.

What makes you think it's the con rod bearing?

A broken rod bearing wouldn't cause all the symptoms you mentioned. Although it does sound pretty terminal, all told.
