Hi im new to this site so go easy on me,I have recently bought a 1979 924 and I have a story to tell,The ca had been stood for some time and needed a fuel pump so one was fitted,Now heres the small problem,When starting the car from cold it fires and splutters starts very rough,sounds flooded to me,After a few minuites it runs fine really nice!!,Leave it for half an hour and then the problems arise again,takes ages to start,starter slow then quick then stops,again sounds flooded,eventually starts rough after few minuites ticking over fine again!!!
any ideas would help,checked cold start valve seems ok???

If it is flooding while sitting hot:

Remove an injector after shutoff and see if it is dribbling gas. If yes, replace all 4 (they're cheap).

Hmm, sounds like you might have some sort of electical problem as well (starter is slow then fast), Check your battery terminals and grounds, a car that old could build up a lot of corrosion over the years. Hope this helps.

Also pull & inspect plugs for rust. Khal's car was behaving the same after he blew his head gasket. . .

Check your grounds. Clean 'em.

Check for dribble at the injectors as someone else has suggested already.

Thanks guys,I will have a look at the weekend,call me stupid but when you flick the high beam lever when the lights are off should the headlamps pop up and flash,When i pull the lever i here a relay click but nothing happens?????

No, they don't pop up and flash, they just stay down and flash. yeah I had the same curiosity.

The driving lights in the bumper should flash (on a Euro-style car) when you flick the lever, so the headlamps don't need to pop up.

Is your thermo-time switch operating correctly? This should switch off the CSV after a few seconds to stop the engine from flooding. Check if the resistance at the heater terminal. If it's high (open) then there's nothing to turn the CSV off.

Hello,

i am dealing right now with the same problem.I found that one of the threats for the sparkplug is bad and the plug is not sealing the cylinder when engine is cold ! So, i gonna buy a helicoil insert retap the coil and the problem should be gone.

No. The thermo-time switch has two terminals. One is the switch contact for the CSV, the other is for a heater circuit within the the thermo-time switch.

The idea is that, when you crank, the heater warms up a bi-metallic strip in the thermo-time switch and, after 'eight' seconds, the bi-metallic strip flips and cuts of the juice to the CSV to limit the amount of neat fuel being thrown into the cylinders.
