I'm 18.

My dad and I split the cost on the car pretty much. We bought my old one and he said if I could get it to run, he would help me out alot with the other costs. So here I am with this V6 conversion that pretty much dropped into my lap. I supose I've just gotten randomly lucky twice finding affordable cars (well at least the purchase price)

Yuck. Took it for a spin today, we broke down. The cracked block must be worse than we thought. Looks like I am either gonna buy a short block, or something. I'm nervous is going to get a little more expensive now. If anyone has a short block 4.3 with a balance shaft, shoot me a PM

bob,
does it have the balance shaft? Mine is the vin W or w/e. Didnt some of the earlier 4300's come sans balance shafts?

oh, my other thought was just dump the vortec all together and find a chevy engine that will fit under the hood with no cowl. Any ideas? I think an ls-1 is a little above my price range.

Im thinking of selling this car, depending on if anyone is interested in it. I'm going to college soon, and it would have to be parked outside all the time. If your interested, go look in the for sale forum.

Well

Just got done doing a compression test. I was suprised, each cylinder is pretty much in the same range. I figured one would have no compression at all or something. I wonder what that damned noise is that it keeps making...

A cracked block would either leak coolant fluid or oil....maybe both! If your getting bottom end noise it is more likely a bad connecting rod bearing. By the sounds of things with you going off to college, your better off either storing the car until you have time and money to complete it or sell it.

If you went the Lt1 route you going to run into an entirely new set of problems such as cooling it, buying a new rad, buying headers a wire harness...and thats just the short list.

It would be much easier to buy another replacement engine like the one you have( complete) and drop it in over a weekend and be done with it.

Ok. Thats Porschev. I figured that choosing a different engine would be alot harder. I will have a look at the oil and see if there is anything nasty inside. Would this cause it to overheat?

Thanks,
Ryan

Well....tell me what kind of noise is the engine making? Overheating can be cause by many things...like blown head gaskets, air locking etc.

Well, it sort of makes this 'whumping' noise It definately comes in the same intervals, and it goes faster when the car revs. I thought it was coming from the driver's side bank, if that helps. I think I will try to record the noise this weekend.

I realize that your 18..and when i was your age I didn't know alot about cars either and learned by getting my hands dirty like your doing. The only thing that the compression test will tell you is if your cylinders are leaking and that's not related to a bottom end knock or a over heating issue. It does tell you that your valves are all opening and closing fine and that you don't have ring leak down or any holes in your pistons/ cylinder walls.

Does the car smoke white somke when it runs?
