I'm swapping transmissions in my '81 931. The shifter is a little loose. Without buying too many extra parts, what should I have to replace while I into this job? I'm trying to keep the car cheap, but want it done right the first time.
Thanks for your help. |

If you have the Audi style gearbox, there's a pin that gradually wears itself into an egg-shape, causing a lot of play at the shift lever. You can either replace the shift lever (~$50) or replace just the pin something like I did here - http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=14560
With the earlier "snailshell" (aka- Getrag) gearbox, there are bushings to replace, but as far as I know, '81-up 931's (in North America and Japan) got the Audi box. (Europe, RoW 931's got the snailshell all the way from '79-'84)
[If your shift lever looks like this - <click for picture>, you have the Audi gearbox.] _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."
