So I spent about 50 minutes driving in one gust yesterday, which is the longest single drive my car has seen in a while. Everything was running fine though, so I was in dreamland.

Then I get to my destination, hop out of my car, and start going inside; I realize I had forgotten my cellphone and head back to the car, at which point it goes "pop... tinkle tinkle glug glug glug glug glug glug tinkle tinkle tinkle..." and I watch my entire coolant reservoir dump itself on the ground. I pop open the hood immediately and jump in, lots of coolant dribbling out under the headlight, but otherwise dry everywhere else. Couldn't see what had caused the coolant to dissappear.

So the car's parked for about an hour and a half. I get back to it and take it about half a mile to a gas station, pick up some coolant and pour it in to test it out, and it all stays in. I put in a bit more and take it home, but am just too tired and head to bed.

I check it out today, all the coolant's still sitting there, so I fill it up... At which point it all stays in. Run the engine for a bit, bring it up to temp... absolutely fine. I'm stumped.

The only abnormal thing was that I parked it on a relatively steep downhill grade, but even then... Just what in the hell happened? Any ideas?

Also, the engine temp was normal both before and after this happened.

Bleed the cooling system and have your coolant tank cap checked or just replace it.

Okay but... Any idea why the whole reservoir would completely dump on a whim like that? It wasn't just a little lost, the reservoir was almost empty when it had been at the max.

it is a pressurized system, if the rad cap fails then it will do this, as Paul said replace the cap regardless.

although that being said, how many miles are on the car?

I'm just kind of surprised that so much of the reservoir could be kicked out like that. No biggie, not like caps are expensive.

It has almost 163k miles.

If the motor was hot (but not boiling) when you stopped, the coolant would stop circulating when you switch off and the coolant in the block might then go above boiling point and boil over. All the above advice is good and maybe flush the system.
